Thanks, guys! You're right, asleepawake - I can't really imagine Lady Mary studying anything. However, I like the nickname :)

Hi, Magical Realist. I am about to have mine on next Wednesday. Thanks for the info! And Congrats on your acceptance! So I suppose there will be more than one interviewer involved?

And good luck to ghijklmn too!

Good luck to you. My interview was two people, and I get the impression that's pretty par for the course. They asked me a lot about my research interests, what I've been up to (I've been out of undergrad awhile), and why my interests shifted so vastly (it was pretty vast indeed). There weren't a lot of the corporate-y type interview questions, but again, I think that's probably all contingent upon whom you get.

And Rose--I know they sent out a round of interview invites a week or so ago, and I was told that they'd be doing notifications around this weekend. I'm not saying this precludes another round necessarily, but I wasn't explicitly given that impression. So take that at face value.

And re: UT--I'm waiting on that one, too. (Every time I see comp lit results posted for a program I didn't apply to, I want to stomp my feet a little bit. Still happy for those who got a "yes", but a little less in the way of radio silence would also be appreciated:))

Ahhhh, I assume that Chicago and NYU for English PhD results are all out. What about their CompLit? Has anyone heard anything from those two schools?
Emily-- I'm waiting for same! No word yet. I've gotten some good news from Michigan and Columbia though, so I'm counting my blessings.

Congrats, Firefox! Do you know if they're done notifying for Michigan? I applied there, but still no peep...

Thanks! I'm not sure if they're done or not, but I haven't gotten anything official yet, so perhaps they're still working things out.

And I don't see why someone with a strong application would bother applying to dozens of places: I highly doubt this hypothetical person really fits in and likes all of those programs.

Not everyone is a really strong applicant. There are many people that truly aren't sure where they fall, particularly in an increasingly competitive climate.

Even you assume that you will be rejected from more than 50% of your programs.

Even you assume that you will be rejected from [all] of your programs. {Edited to reflect my unending despair. -T.E.}

I still stand behind my earlier comments, though.

So I called Northwestern, and apparently they're down to a final pool of applicants that they're deciding about. The program assistant said to expect decisions within a week or so. Anyone else really hoping for this?

No news from UT Austin or Upenn comp. lit? When should I expect it?

I got impatient and e-mailed the department to check my status. Got a nice surprise! Apparently they're just waiting for funding information. So if you're feeling curious, perhaps drop them a line :)

Congratulations! If you don't mind me asking, who did you email at UT?

Thanks! I just e-mailed the main address (complit) and, embarrassingly enough, I addressed it to Billy. However, it was NOT Billy who answered. Oops.

In Texas, everyone answers to billy. Probably.

Heehee. I just laugh at everything you type because I imagine amy sedaris saying it.

Anyone applying to Emory?  I see that last year they emailed invites for interviews in late Jan, but I haven't seen any new activity for their program this year.

Many thanks for the info! Just had mine. The two interviewers were incredibly nice and did most of the talking. Also asked about the research, but not much. Just the skype connection was so bad that I could barely hear them after the first ten minutes, especially when they were introducing the program. I didn't get much of it when they explained about the next step. Do you still remember what they said about the decision date?

Hey Gustav! They said the department is meeting on Friday to make final decisions, so we should be getting a call this weekend. I'm just curious - was Jonathan Eburne one of your interviewers? (Just wondering if he attends all the meetings.) Good luck!

Also, if anyone's curious: Stanford is looking to notify on February 14. This may make or break a few Valentine's Days.

Friday, That is great! Thanks! No, Prof. J. Eburne was not. Both of them are scholars in my field (East Asian studies). So I guess they just assign the most relevant faculty members? Good luck to you and Magical Realist!

Thanks, Gustav. Good luck to the both of you as well! And ghi, I think Prof Eburne being in on your interview was quite the auspicious omen. It seems that they chose interviewers who were really behind your application, so I'm sure having the DGS as one of those doesn't hurt. (On a related note: did they give you any idea of when they'd be sending out responses? I don't want to bog them down with questions, but I need a "news" fix).

And congrats to everyone who's gotten good news this week!  Btw, Donthate, you are kind of my hero right now...
