I got a mail from POI and he said that he will appeal my application to the admission committee. So far, so good, huh? BUT, he also said that he is not a member of that committee, so then he said just let us see how the decision will be made...

Damn, do you guys think how much his appealing works to the committee? Anybody has an experience like this?

I believe that if he committed to be your advisor, then they will definitely accept you.

I hope so...

Given that they have enough funding. Some schools won't admit unless they can fund you, and so not every professor can get every student they want each year.

I have definitely heard of professors not getting the students they wanted, but hopefully he's able to wrangle a spot for you. Good luck!

Yep. No matter what happens, at least you know that he wanted you and that he fought for you. At the least, it will be a good professional connection in the future. And if you keep in touch, and end up reapplying next year, you'd be that much more likely to get in next year, since I would think it would be unlikely for the professor to get passed over two years in a row, and you've shown your interest and dedication to the program.

I have heard that sometimes profs on the adcom have more pull than other profs...  But if he's going to bat for you, that's a good thing!

my POI also told me so and he didn't mention anything about not being on admission committee or anything like that. He told me that he will put me on RA from second semester and will ask department for TA for first semester Just_Cuz_19.gif.

Though, considering the fact that the school is a TOP 3 in my field291.gif, well you can seen I haven't posted it as an admission bellow 292.gif . I try not to count on it, not because I am negative or anything, but because if anything goes wrong, this false hope will hurt me more than an ordinary rejection.padded.gif

So always plan for the worst just to stay healthy  7165.gif

In any case, it looks good for the specialist in your field to say "I want this one."  Meanwhile, perhaps the Committee has also said "hmmm, this applicant looks like a great match for so-and-so."  The committee is (theoretically) looking to compose a great cohort that will support the aims of the department as a whole.  If it comes down to enough funding, well, no amount of praise from ANYONE (committee members included) will make money appear out of thin air.

The situation with my favorite school is precisely as described.  The potential mentor in my case has appealed to the committee; but I feel like I'm going to be the bubble boy, right on the edge of acceptance, but not making the cut.  What sucks is that this is the wrong combination for my chances to be good - I am probably less than what the committee / this school would take outright, but I have an advocate.  If only this advocate were at a slightly less stringent school, I'd feel like I had a really good chance.  This is also the only school with which I have a POI, so I've developed a contact at a highly ranked school I probably will not get in to, and neglected developing a POI at a school I would have an excellent chance of getting into with an advocate on my side.  UGH.

I'm afraid that this is what I'm heading for...

Too all of you in similar situations; best of luck!
