I also had to change my start date when I applied for USC - at first she thought I'd be summer II since I had the first two pre-reqs but not artic disorders... then she discovered that observation hrs (which I also didn't have) go the WHOLE summer so she had to go back in and change my app to summer I.  She said that it would show online the semester change once my application was reviewed and if I got accepted (etc).  I have since accepted another offer, so I took myself off the waitlist.  But yes, they will make sure you start during the right semester.  :-)

thanks for that. :) they just didnt respond to the "put me on the waitlist" email. idk. i just want everything to be perfect. so okay i wont email them. i just need to accept life and be patient. ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Do you guys think not having a certificate in CI education will restrict me from possibly working with that population in the future?

Not at all. It might make you a little more qualified to work with that population in the future, but all around, SLPs have to be trained to work with the deaf and hard of hearing. Which means you'll be qualified from the beginning of your job. I've talked with one of the audiology professors in my undergrad, and she says that SLPs work with CI all the time. They're learning how to speak as close to what's typically deemed "normal" as proper, and we're the ones they would work with. I think you'd be fine either way working with that population. Just my two cents :-).

I observed an SLP locally where I am that works at a private clinic that does audiology & SLP, and she didn't do a program with any special track for CI.  She does therapy specifically with children who are getting / have gotten CIs.  Just a real life example for context!

Probably not. Having the certificate may make it slightly easier to get your first job, but especially if you try to get one of your internships with that population/do your CFY with that population it shouldn't be much of a problem. It's my understanding that because the field is so broad, and ASHA requires that every program fully covers all the different populations we work with, for the most part having a specific concentration doesn't make too much of a difference except for when you're trying to get into a PhD program.

I honestly don't think it will make a difference. I'd try to get some CI/aural rehab placements in grad school, and try to do something CI-related for your CFY.  You can also take tons of CEUs in specific areas, which can make you more specialized.

Maybe, after grad school, you could even look into getting certified as an auditory-verbal therapist (A.G. Bell), if that is something you'd be interested in?

You should go celebrate your success! As I've said before, this is the kind of situation that deserves confetti/balloons/streamers. Enjoy your night and this wonderful feeling! You deserve it and more!

Thanks everyone for your input regarding CIs. I was unsure if the extra certificate would make a huge difference in employment opportunities after graduation. I feel like my decision is quite clear now. :)

Thanks so much! Who knows, it would be great to have options, but if I don't I won't be too upset...the fact that I know I am going to be a speech pathologist is enough for me!

there are posts for both of my schools and I've heard nothing! Ugh this is so frustrating and upsetting...hard not to think the reason you didn't get an email with the rest is because you didn't get accepted!
