Yay for Western and Appalachian State, Tay1991!  These next couple of weeks are going to be tough but we can do it!! :-)  I'm hoping all of us have multiple acceptances!

Tay, if any of the programs you applied to have a leveling year, I don't see why it would matter whether you had taken any of the prereqs.  Of course, taking these prereqs and doing well can suggest that you would also do well in their program, it seems that with your GPA you have demonstrated your ability to perform in an academic setting.

I understand you're worried, but you should relax and enjoy your last year of undergrad!

1) Thank you, it is nice to see that somebody else that is out of field applied to some of the same schools that I did. Hopefully we will receive some good news!

2) Thanks to you too, I know that I should not be this worried, I think it is just the last minute nerves kicking in! Hopefully the next few weeks will bring good news.

I have this gut feeling we'll be hearing acceptances from Marquette tomorrow and Emerson by the end of the week.  I'm getting extremely anxious...

Why so anxious! I'm sure you are  stellar applicant and will have no problem getting at an acceptance from at least one.

I applied to Northeastern, Columbia and NYU as well! I'm sorry to hear about your NYU rejection. Did you receive an email on Friday? I'm confused as to why so few people have heard back... I'm almost certain that this must mean either I've been rejected or waitlisted. It seems silly for a school to reject solely because of someone's Quant score though; I almost feel as if that's irrelevant in comparison to the other aspects of the application. I'm definitely with you on the anxiety... I just want to have ONE acceptance to ease my worries and help me focus on the my last semester of undergrad. I feel like every time I sit down to study, I end up getting so distracted by looking up grad school things!

I did in fact hear from NYU on Friday. It was a very brief email, nothing in the mail. I bet you get something exciting in the mailbox this week! :) I imagine acceptance letters come in a more sophisticated way...

I am holding out for Columbia right now ... though I did submit my terrible GRE score accidentally when I didn't know they did not require them .. grr!! Have you heard anything about the difficulty of getting in there?

Posted

I also agree that a quant score is silly to reject someone over: Most schools I applied to/looked at said they looked less at the quant portion, or required a lower score for that section.

Though I will say that different people have different ideas of a poor quant. score. Do you mind sharing what percentile you fell into?

I think a poor quant score is a silly thing to reject someone over as well ... though if you have 700 applications for 30 spots, I guess you need some sort of way of weeding through them all ..

My GRE score was: 147Q/154V/5.0Essay

I'm not sure what %ile that is, but I can't imagine it's terribly low.

I think we will hear from Marquette Monday, and I think I'll have two more schools sending stuff out this week, and I'm almost a nervous wreck.

Worst is, I don't have to be anywhere unti 1 tomorrow, so I have the entire morning to sit with my email account, nothing to distract me like during the rest of the week :/

If however Marquette does do them by postal service for whatever reason, I'll at least get the letter super quick :)

Any other Wisconsinites on here lurking around?

147q is in the 31st percentile.

sroberts, I don't think that score will necessarily keep you out of programs, especially if you broke 300 and the rest of your app is strong.

I really hope you're right :) I visited MGH during the application process and sat in on a class, and met with a professor. I have no idea if that kind of stuff helps, but hopefully in some way it will.

I noticed you applied to CU-Boulder. That one was on my list actually but I didn't end up applying. Let me know if you go there and what you think -- if I have to do this process again I may consider adding it in this time!

I'm new here too. I have been getting very anxious to hear from schools too. I also visited MGH last year and hope it will help as my GRE scores were not as great as they could have been. Good luck to everyone!

I think taking initiative shows that you're a serious candidate with a genuine interest; I hope that MGH values applicants who make time to visit, communicate with profs, etc. I know they're very competitive, but if you don't try, you definitely won't get in.

Oh, and yes, I'm dying to find out about Boulder, but it's incredibly competitive. Check out the Boulder thread in this subforum--the numbers that someone posted are intense! I'm definitely trying to stay firmly in "realistically optimistic" territory. :-P

Well your stats are super great -- wouldn't be surprised if it all turns out in your favor :) Thanks for the boost. It's so hard to keep it together when the first things you hear are rejections!

Hello!  I am from Wisconsin, but currently live in Chicago.  I'd be so excited to hear something positive from Marquette tomorrow!   :)

Do you have a top choice in WI?

I'm not sure if you've seen these MGH numbers (albeit the ASHA EdFind data may need to be taken with a grain of salt!), but I think your stats are fine:

  • Average GRE:
  • Verbal Reasoning: 148-170
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 145-166
  • Analytical Writing: 3.0-6.0
  • Average GPA:
  • 3.63

Thank you for sending this across :) I haven't gone back to see the stats, but it's definitely helpful. And really, at this point there is nothing more I can do so hopefully what I've done will be enough for at least one of the schools!

My top choice was Madison...but that's now out, as I'm waitlisted.  I highly doubt many get taken off the waitlist each year.  My second choice would be Marquette, but only with lots of funding.  :/  Otherwise anything else with in state tuition would be wonderful, just would be happy to be in :)

If you have a community college system in your state, check to see if they offer the "transferring credit" version of biology - this is the class that most undergrad institutions call biology. I took that class (4 hr credit) for only $290. You should be able to do the same thing for statistics. My bio class was entirely online, although there was a local option of 1 night a week bio, too. If I get admitted, and they tell me I have to re-take statistics (I have AP credit for it), I am looking into the 1-night a week course to take over the summer. MUCH cheaper than even USU online. USU does offer Statistics according to the website, although I have not checked to see if it is offered online or during the summer. Might be worth checking into!! What is CLEP? (sorry, I'm ignorant and jumping in!)

midnight streetlight, are you anticipating to hear from UVA this week?

I am!

The only thing I'm worried about (aside from outright rejection, of course) is that if you're not a first-round UVA acceptee, it seems that they sometimes don't notify you until late March or early April.

Kcald716 - tried to reply to your post but ended up just re-posting! Still figuring out this site. CLEP stands for college level something, not sure, I had to google it. Basically it's like AP credit but you get to take it anytime. I'm not really sure how it works ... Whether its scored like the GRE or if it's pass/fail. One of my friends took classes online from straighterline.com for pre reqs for columbia's public health program. But straighterline isn't accredited so really need to check with your school to see if they would accept. I've taken most of my speech pre reqs online through suny (state university of new York) new paltz and I've really enjoyed. But even the community colleges in the suny network are about $300/credit and that is for in-state. I am really dreading statistics.

I saw that in the results page, too. But to be honest, everyone who was a late-notify seemed to have much lower stats than you. I have a good feeling that you'll be in the clear  :)

Especially since on EdFind, it lists a wide range of GRE scores and average GPA of 3.55.

Boo on that cost!  It might even be cheaper to try an out-of-state community college at that price, wow!

Thanks for the answer on CLEP!  I have never heard of that, but I'm sure it is useful for some people!

Did anyone receive confirmation from UVA that their app was complete? I know they have received all of my materials, but I never received any sort of communication from them.

I didn't receive anything from UVA aside from a confirmation email the day I submitted my app.

I know they have all my materials, so I'm going to take their "don't panic about incomplete status" memo on the ApplyYourself page to heart.

Yeah UVA seems to admit/reject in waves and as far as I know they don't have a wait list (at least not one that they officially tell you you are on). Last year I didn't hear from them until April. I think I had already sent in my deposit to my current school. But you have good stats so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
