Zinny Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Never never give up. I am a 41 year old who has a BS in Comm. Sciences and 8 years as an SLPA and another 8 in other areas of special education. When people asked why I didn't "just go back and get my Masters", I explained how hard it is, not like other programs! I went back to school last year, cleaned up my GPA and re- applied. Just heard today that I got in to my undergraduate school. NEVER thought it could happen. Don't give up keep trying, get experience and know that no matter what, YOU are awesome! katieliz456 and midnight 2
SLPjmar Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 i saw it on a previous post in the grad cafe results forum like from a year or two ago I'm not sure. I saw a rejection in the results today... but I'm not sure if they interpreted the waitlist letter as a rejection. I haven't seen anyone in the results come off of the USC wait list, though. Here's to hoping.
futureslpgirl Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Since it is late in the day and WCU still says my app is still ready for review I am taking it to mean that I won't get an official acceptance today and that I have probably been wait listed. If that is true then I am going on a perfect 4/4 on the wait list front! Same here. Praying for at least the wait list.
Nebraska19 Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Same here. Praying for at least the wait list. I would not worry if AY still says your application is complete and ready for review. Their website says if it stills says that then you are still in the running. In looking at the results section it seems like Illinois State is giving admission decisions out in the same way and somebody just posted an acceptance that states they heard the admissions will take a few days since they have to enter in each person's decision individually. Another school I applied to did something similar in notifying that the decision on our application had been made and my portal took a few days to update. So I wouldn't think bad news just yet!
srh Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Glad I'm not the only one who didn't hear about Pacific today...hopefully there will be more phone calls tomorrow. I'm hoping, but unsure, if that makes any sense. It doesn't seem like it would take more than a day to call 35 people, unfortunately. And they were very clear at the interviews that their cap was 35.
srh Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Accepted to FSU and UNM on the same day!!! My face literally hurts from smiling too hard. Congrats to everyone with good news today, and DON'T GIVE UP HOPE (EVER) for those who didn't... I've been working on getting into grad school for 3 years! way to go! This is my second year applying to grad schools, and hopefully my last.
mystiqueSLP Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Same here. Praying for at least the wait list. Do you know exactly when Montclair State will get back to us? And you applied to a lot of places I wish I applied to more places for more options..
midnight Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 Do you know exactly when Montclair State will get back to us? And you applied to a lot of places I wish I applied to more places for more options.. mystique, are you open to living in the Deep South or the Southwest? If you decide to apply to schools again, I think there are a lot of good options in those regions, not to mention more schools in the Midwest.

If you decide to apply to schools again, I think there are a lot of good options in those regions, not to mention more schools in the Midwest. I'm not sure. I know I'll definitely geographically expand my list if I have to apply again. Personally, I've always been a Northeast/city/coastal girl and I have family in CA. I applied to IU and UNC under the advisement of a professor (he used to work closely with the SLP department at IU) who thought I had a reasonably strong out-of-field application and should try for some reaches. I want to work with multicultural children who speak English as a second language which is more easily accessible in large urban areas like NYC and San Diego though.

It's too bad the Boston schools are all so pricey or I'd definitely recommend them for you.

I know UT-Austin isn't exactly the easiest to get into, but they have a program focusing on bilingual children with ESL. Mostly focus on Spanish, of course, but maybe another to consider! They even have special funding for students interested in that specialty - not sure exactly how it works/how much there is, but it may be a future option! Just thought I'd share my 2cents!

And you know, they said that once someone turns them down they move on to the next person on the list. So it's not really over until you get a letter saying that the class is full. Even if we don't hear from them right away, we may eventually
mystiqueSLP Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Ah, gotcha. It's too bad the Boston schools are all so pricey or I'd definitely recommend them for you. Actually, I was going to apply to Boston U but they used CSDCAS (I've only heard bad things about it) and I think it wanted transcripts or GRE scores to be sent out about 6 weeks before the deadline. Since it was around the first week of December when I saw this part, I thought it would automatically disqualify me for being late with that so I ended up not applying.

The problem with the Southern/Southwestern states for me is that almost all of the bilingual children speak Spanish which I, very stupidly, did not choose to learn (I've kicked myself for choosing French over Spanish - what am I going to do with French?? I should have applied to schools in Canada...). There are a lot of people out there who can speak Spanish which would give them a leg up over me for programs like that. Big metro areas like NYC and cities in CA have a more diverse population besides Spanish speakers (hopefully some French/Burmese/Chinese/Japanese speakers) so I feel like I would be more useful and have a better chance there. I'll definitely look into it though, maybe take some Spanish classes during the year along with some SLP pre-reqs if I don't go anywhere.

If it helps at all, I studied French for roughly seven years from middle school through college, and learning Spanish has been a breeze for me. I think it's really fun as well, and I love that there are so many everyday opportunities to speak it. Even if you just have the chance to take two or three semesters, you'll come away with a solid foundation and will be able to supplement your studies on your own.

I've heard that French and Spanish are really similar - I can even correctly guess what some Spanish words mean when spoken to because it sounds just like its French counterpart to me. If I can, would like to learn some Spanish while in grad school too. I do have NYU if it comes down to rejections from everywhere else. It'll just be a case of me deciding whether a lot in loans would be worth it or reapply next year (and be called a loser by my family who don't even know what SLP is! :/ ).

That last sentence sounds sad:-(. Just let them know that you got into a great school but the cost might be prohibitive. Hopefully they will understand! Plus, there is still a lot of time to hear from your other schools. Stay confident. If you could get into NYU, it seems reasonable to expect at least one or two other eventual acceptances. :-) mystiqueSLP 1

I really do understand the family front, mine has asked me a few times... sometimes they even remember now. Don't take that to mean they are not supportive, but they don't really know the field all that well or what it involves. Though if I have to hear my Dad tell me that grad school is not very hard to get in to and then tell his story again... I might have to fly down there and... er... well do something. Take care, and good luck. This waiting is just killing me, I want to find a cryo chamber and pop in for a couple weeks and just wake up to letters. SLPtoBEweee and mystiqueSLP 2

badgerina Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 I just got an email from a university I applied to asking for donations. Ummm you haven't even admitted me yet! And I'm dying to hear from UWM, and historically they notify tomorrow! Tomorrow my email refresh button might wear out... katieliz456 1
