Sorry if this has already been covered--I'm new here and couldn't seem to find info about this in past topics.

I applied to 10 PhD programs and so far I've been accepted to 2 places and rejected from 1 place. I'm really anxious to hear back from the other programs I applied to, so I've been trying to check their websites every once in a while. The thing is, it's really easy to check your application status at certain websites, and seems impossible on others. Am I missing something, or do some schools not let you check your application status online? I'm specifically curious about NYU--I just cannot figure out how to check my application's status on their GSAS application website.

If you have any insight into this, please let me know.

I think it doesn't even depend just on the university, but sometimes even the department within the university. But yes, some programmes let you check the status online, and plenty don't. You can always try emailing or calling the admissions people at the department, but in many cases they might not be willing or allowed to give you any information.

One of the most annoying university out there is probably Harvard, which only sends official decisions via the postal service, some time in mid or late March, and usually won't tell you anything via email or on the phone.

NYU GSAS sent me an email a couple weeks after I applied with an ID number and a link to their materials tracking system (http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/request/smts.html). That said, it's incredibly unhelpful. It will tell you if they have received GRE scores or anything else that wasn't uploaded with your application, but there's nothing that tells you if your app is complete or where it is in the whole process. Good luck!

Oops. Sorry guys, I accidentally downvoted JJJJ22's post and there doesn't seem to be a way to undo it.

I up-voted it to clear it out.

Oh, and btw, on my apps, the only ones that are easy to find a status are the apply-web ones. The ECU banner system app doesn't seem to indicate a place wher the app status might be updated or even listed at all. UNCG's app system seems like it might have a place but all it keeps saying is submission status submitted. Unsure if that status will ever change or if I just have to wait to get a letter in the mail. :-/. I wish schools would be more consistent. It's not like grad school application software should be rocket science... Pardon the expression...

Lol, thanks guys. As for application software, I work for a large, well-known private university and our system was designed...no joke...in the 1980s. It's entirely text-based, MS DOS style, where you have to tab around to different fields. It's embarrassing, frankly. Ours is probably one of the worst, but that might give you an idea of what you're dealing with.

Thanks everyone--this is very helpful. I guess it sounds like NYU and many other universities just don't have a way of checking online. Good luck to you all!
