I got a call from one of my schools the other day telling me I'd been accepted. That was great news and all, but then I immediately went and shot myself in the foot. The guy on the phone told me that one of the professors wanted to work with me, and I said I didn't recognize him. Of course, it was actually the professor I had expressed an interest in on my application, but I had somehow forgotten his name.  :o The interview (if it could be called one) ended pretty soon after that.

Anyway, I've been fretting about this ever since. Could they rescind my acceptance because of this? I think I made a pretty major error, and it'd be great to see what you guys thought.

Hmm, I doubt they'd go as far as rescinding your acceptance just because of one slip-up. Any idea who "the guy on the phone" was? If it was some type of receptionist or someone from the university's general grad admissions department, I wouldn't sweat it too much :)

Does the professer have a weird name? If so (and if you have the chance), you could say you're really embarassed but you'd never heard the name spoken out loud before and you've been pronouncing it in your head wrong so didn't recognize it...

Haha, thanks for the encouragement, everyone. The professor has a really typical, American-sounding name, so I can't blame it on that.  :P I think I'll stop sweating now and never mention the incident again to anyone.

You could always email the person back and explain that you were so excited about the offer/interview that you got confused. After you put down the phone it suddenly hit you -- and of course you know who the person is and you are interested in working with him! say you're happy to talk again and pick the conversation up where you left off (maybe mention questions, if you have any). It's not at all uncommon for students to get flustered during these interviews so don't worry over much, just do your best to correct the situation as best you can.

Reason number 462 why I refuse to answer any phone call from unknown numbers. They are going to voicemail. I am absolutely certain I would have some major foot in mouth moment from being flustered and excited. I bet they hear all kinds of goofiness... I wouldn't worry too much.

This kind of happened to me, and the embarrassing part was that I CALLED THEM! So I got the phonecall from a POI letting me know that I was in, but it went to voicemail. Being me, and therefore being eager to perform epic acts of self sabotage, I actually waited until I got out of work (my phone is off while I'm at work) and I called her back to find out about financials. I'm pretty sure I said that I was "excited" at least four times and there were also really awkward gaps between her information and my questions as all of the important ones I had were rapidly fleeing my head. I was just gurgling and blubbing like an infant. I also may have interrupted her dinner.

But my housemate has an even better story! When he got his acceptance call, he was so shocked that he immediately decided to spend 10 minutes talking about how the program he got into (Political Theory) was completely useless and that he had no compatibility with the department and was curious as to why they had accepted him. Guess what? He still has his acceptance and juicy stipend. So there you go!
