Northwestern

Hi All!

Are any of you out there going to be attending Northwestern this fall or going to visitation days to scope it out?

I am still on the fence about it. I don't see much written about the program elsewhere, though I love the foundation in research.

Thanks!

I was accepted to Northwestern last month, and I'm going to visit this week. (Can't attend the visitation days due to another commitment - wish I could, the schedule looked great!) I'm really looking forward to hearing more about the program and getting a feel for the campus, as I, too, am a big fan of the program. I'll report back after my visit! :)

I was accepted Friday, but I don't think I'll be able to attend the visitation days and for the time being I have no plans to visit. However, I also love their program (I requested an info pack from them several months back) and the research aspect.

I look forward to hearing how your visit goes, Loseric!

Hi!! I was also accepted to Northwestern, and will be attending both visitation days in March. This was my top choice of schools, and I need to be in Chicago so I have already decided to enroll, and will be starting this summer! :) I went to an information session this past fall, and fell in love with the program. They had a panel of alumni who spoke, and the program director was wonderful. I'll post again after the visit in March, and hope to see some of you there! :)

I am probably going to the preview days in march. I am just looking into the logistics of getting to Chicago from NYC.

My only concern with the program is that Northwestern's Graduate School of Education is ranked 9th in the nation, but this program is not ranked in the top 17. Now I am not one to put much stock into rankings, but I this just didn't settle right for me.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be?

Hi jenjen9ny,

I also have been reviewing the rankings and trying to determine the difference for a variety of programs.  The next rankings come out on March 12th so perhaps things will change around then.  Are you going to any other visit days for other schools?

It's likely unranked because the program is master's only. US News's rankings are ranking doctoral programs. I'm not familiar with Northwestern's faculty or curriculum, so I cannot comment on its quality, but I'd imagine that's why it's unranked.

hi emvtgse,

The only other "visitation" like days I am going to are the NYU interview days. I wanted to go to UMass Amherst days but they are right in-between NYU and Northwestern giving me no time to get to all three. I am still waiting to hear back from a few schools though (most likely will hear back next week) because of a late LOR.

Hi Loseric,

Did you get to visit Northwestern? I know we were having lots of snow in Chicago last week, so hope you made it! If so, how did it go? Any advice or insights?

Thanks!

Hi eckielauren! Sorry I missed this post until now.   Yes, I did visit Northwestern and I really loved it (yes, despite the frigid weather!) I was able to meet with the program director, my academic advisor, some current students, and interview for four internships. I was even able to sit in on a class at the end of the day, which was really great to see as a prospective student. (It was a really packed day, can you tell?) Everyone in the higher ed office was very helpful and informative and it felt like a great place to go to school. The one thing that really impressed me is that they made a real effort to pair me with internships that matched my interests. The admissions office did warn me that since I came earlier than the preview weekend, some offices might not be ready to interview, but I was pleasantly surprised by the interviews I did have and would have loved to work with just about all of them. While I'm a little sad I'll be missing out on all the official events and presentations during the preview days, I got a great sense of the school and program during my visit and I felt it was a little more authentic to see what a typical day is like at the school. While I still have other schools to visit, Northwestern is definitely in my number one slot now.

I hope that's helpful for you! Are you going to attend the preview days? If so, I'd love to hear how they go!

Hi Loseric - thank you for the great information, and I'm so glad it went well for you! How great that you were able to sit in on a class, and I'm happy to hear that they did a good job at matching you with your internship interests. I'll be attending the preview days next Monday and Tuesday, and I will definitely let you know how all of the events and presentations go. I'm especially excited to be able to meet some of the current students and see some of their presentations on their Master's Research Project. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

As for the weather, I have been living in Chicago for 6 years (coming from North Carolina!) and you do get used to the cold and wind eventually. And the summers are awesome! :)

Reviving this thread since the other Northwestern thread is for PhD students...

I saw that several people posted their acceptance results for the Masters program in Higher Ed Administration and Policy. Is anybody planning on going to the Preview Days this year?

Hi higheredhopeful! I was accepted earlier this week to Northwestern! I just booked my flight to Chicago for Preview Days--I'm excited. Have you heard back from other Higher Ed programs?

Hi there! Yay congrats on the acceptances you've gotten! I've also heard back from Boston College (accepted), Vanderbilt (accepted), and UCLA (denied). This is going to be a tough decision that will basically come down to cost, I'm thinking...

The Preview Days at Northwestern seem like they'll be really worth it to attend. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Masters Projects. What do you think about the school not having a doctoral program for higher ed? Do you think that will influence your decision at all?

Awesome, congrats on being accepted to those awesome schools. Yea, I think the Preview Days will be really beneficial to my decision. I'm not looking to get my PhD yet, so I'm fine with there not being a doctoral program. Does it affect your decision?

Thanks! And yeah, I'm mostly just curious why they don't have a PhD/Ed.D option since all the other schools I looked at had one.
