cdparker03 Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 So, while we wait anxiously checking our emails 50x a day I'm curious about people applying this time around. What does everyone do? How long have you been out of school or coming right out of masters program? Age? etc. I applied to Media and culture based programs. I'm 31. I went back in school for my masters in 2009 after 6 years of no school. I got my masters in May 2012 and now I'm hoping to get in a PHD program (please God -ha). I've been working in the media field (television) for the past 9 years and recently I started teaching as an adjunct at a University and online courses. I absolutely love teaching. It's definitely more of where my heart is. So what is everyone else's background? This wait is killing me!!! HA
CHagen Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I've been working in military public affairs for 20 years...I have a decade on you as far as age. I'm applying to one program and am interested in the intersection of org. comm. and social media. I went back for my Masters in 1999 after being out of school for 6 years, but was still full-time military. I received my Masters in 2002 and would really like to build on my academic and work experience, get a PhD to build my research and theoretical expertise, and eventually apply it in the classroom and through research consulting work. I have found in my military experience that I really enjoy mentoring our junior mass communication specialists and public affairs officers -- I hope to translate that to the academic environment. It looks like I wasn't on first round select list, but there is still a small chance...though I feel a bit like Jim Carey's character in Dumb and Dumber when his friend is trying to be realistic about dating Mary: "So your telling me I have a chance!!!" I hope I'm not too disillusional. Good luck to you! Fingers crossed you get what you want.
callista Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I applied to just one program, myself - health communication at UConn (I see you're in Hartford as well!) I'm 40 and I've been working in public health for 15 years. Got my MA in 1998. I work for a state health care agency and I'm interested in using social media in the public health care sector. My goal is to stay with the state and do applied research. This is my second time applying to PhD programs and I'm a bit wiser and experienced than when I was 25. CHagen 1
cdparker03 Posted March 2, 2013 Author Posted March 2, 2013 Yes I am in Hartford. Originally from NC but been here for 9 years since college due to work. Wow a lot of experience between the both of you. I wish you both the best of luck. CHagen - I love the Dumb and Dumber reference - HAHAHA.
