BC1010 Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Hello, I'm currently pursuing a masters in social studies education, but I'm already thinking that I might someday (soon) prefer academic research in History (American in particular) to secondary school education. Anyone else made the transition from K-12 teaching to academic History? Also, any thoughts on the application process? I'm loathe to do another masters, but I'm unsure how much of a leg up an M.A. in Education with a focus on history will provide.
CrazyCatLady80 Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Actually, it isn't that uncommon. I know several people who were teachers and went back for their PhD. I think it makes them not only good academics, but strong teachers, which is sadly often lacking in academia.
AKACaz Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 There's at least one ex-high school teacher in NYU's program. He's lovely, brilliant, and far more well-adjusted as a working adult even than the uber-competent younger PhDs I know. I'd say go for it!
Andean Pat Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Hi!!! I am a schoolteacher who will begin her PhD in the fall!!! First degrees in Argentina at university level enable both to do research and teach, so I have been doing both. I love teaching and I think it is indispensable for academia: Research for your own knowledge is just undoable. So congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LeatherElbows Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 I taught middle school for three years after undergrad. It was a positive experience and I'm looking forward to TAing during the PhD years. I think it's important to have enthusiastic history teachers, especially at the college level. History is one of those subjects that can either be life-changing or absolutely wrecked, depending on how it is taught.
