rustledjimmies Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Sad times. While waiting to hear back from schools I was looking through my grad school applications just for fun, and I realized that in the first sentence of my SOP I misspelled Columbia as "Colmumbia". I facedesk'd and sat there torn between pure horror and trying not to laugh at just how ridiculous of a misspelling this was. To claim some of my dignity back, I will note that this was my 10th application and I was quite tired of the process by this time, and going through applications quite quickly. You're welcome for the $100, Columbia... I'll just be waiting for that rejection now...
Bren Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Yeah I had a similar one when I was looking over my sop the other day. I said "I service-oriented" instead of "I AM service-oriented", I couldn't believe it. Here's to hoping that neither one of our mistakes gets us rejected. *Fingers crossed*
MSW13 Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 How awful! Seriously, that sucks. In all of my reading about the do's and dont's of grad school admissions, I've seen a lot of comments basically saying that contrary to popular belief, a misspelled word is not going to get you automatically rejected. However, if it is the first of a few errors that will tell them that you aren't up to the challenge of grad school level writing/editing/proof reading. Don't sweat a single typo...if you are awesome, they will most likely ignore it.
Kadisha Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Lol what is with Columbia? In my SOP for SIPA i spelled it as Colombia for one of my "Columbia"s. Almost had a heart attack when I saw it, but then I told myself, if they're going to reject me because of a typo then it's not worth going there anyway. Too bad I'll never know.
musicmage09 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 If it makes you feel better,Columbia and UPenn were both due on the same day for me. After submitting, I realized I made two typos (left out verbs) in the first paragraph. I definitely freaked out because these schools were my best fits. I even considered re-uploading a revised SOP, but I didn't. lI revamped my SOP and it was significantly better for the other applications. Well as you can see from my results, I had better luck with the subpar SOP! I think it just goes to show that if the school is a good fit for you, then you've got a real shot.
thunderchunky Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I like the use of "facedesk" as a verb. Haha. I would be horrified as well, but like the other posters have said, it's not necessarily a death sentence. Good luck!
KD_UP Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 oh well. I misspelled berkeley as berklyey (lol) . And ive been rejected as well. Not to dishearten you guys, but i don't think such small things matter honestly. and if it does, its a very petty way of judging a student who has to go through the such tedious application process.

Columbia had the most complicated application out of all the schools I applied for. The "educational resume" bit still boggles my mind.
