ald360 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 How friendly are the professors and other students? I've heard that they could be a bit stand-offish/cold. mystiqueSLP I sent you a PM
ald360 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I live down the street from Seton Hall (literally) so ask me if you want to know what the town or school is like Thank you! I would love to know more about the town (I live about 25 min away and would definitely be commuting if I was to go there). Do you know any students who completed their program? I haven't heard much about it except for that there is a large focus on clinical experiences which I really like.
hopefulslp88 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 For those of you accepted to Adelphi, how were you notified and did your online status change? Thanks!!
mystiqueSLP Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Thank you! I would love to know more about the town (I live about 25 min away and would definitely be commuting if I was to go there). Do you know any students who completed their program? I haven't heard much about it except for that there is a large focus on clinical experiences which I really like. I don't know any students who completed the program but my friend goes to SHU for her undergrad. It's a small school and a bit old-fashioned where a lot of administrative stuff is done by hand and through face-to-face visits with an advisor. That may or may not be your thing but my friend experienced a "clerical error: where she took two courses that ended up fulfilling the same requirement so now she's taking an extra class this semester to catch up and graduate on time. I've heard that Seton Hall has a strong clinical focus that is pretty good too. As for the town itself, I love my hometown It's small but diverse and everyone is pretty friendly. A lot of families with young children and business people commuting to the city for work. SHU's campus is a little close to the "bad" side of town, near Newark, but the village/town of South Orange is nice. It's close to the train station, a movie theater, some restaurants and there are always cops patrolling so it's pretty safe to walk around at night.
Anuradha Murti Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Hi all! I also got into NYU. Does anyone plan to go to the admitted students event on April 4? I'd have to fly in and miss class (I'm doing a post-bacc year right now), and I'm just wondering if it's worth it. I've never visited, though, and would like to get a feel for the program. It's odd, because there are a few posts floating around Grad Cafe and that Speech Pathology "live journal" site (http://speechpathology.livejournal.com/) that seem to question the reputation of NYU - I think one post suggested it was in danger of losing its accreditation. I can't seem to get any specifics, though!! The website and the webinar I attended make the program seem really great - so I can't figure out what that's about. Has anyone else seen this/does anyone know more about this? Lastly - I called Hunter College to ask about notification timing, and the girl who answered told me "I think I heard in late April." Obviously, that's after the April 15 deadline! How does everyone plan to handle this? I guess just put down the $500 deposit at NYU, and if I get into CUNY, take the loss? By the way - congrats to all on NYU - perhaps we'll be classmates! Re Hunter College - Graduate Admissions told me this morning that "official" notification will come from their office, and that won't be for a "few weeks" (I got an email from the clinic director yesterday saying I'd been accepted, and that all accepted applicants would be notified by the graduate admissions office). The clinic director didn't include any info about deadlines for acceptance, though - and Graduate Admissions didn't have that info either, or at least the young woman who spoke to me didn't. I'm happy about being accepted at Hunter, but I really liked the professors I met at Lehman, and they (Lehman) won't be notifying until the first week of April. Any ideas of how to handle this?
slpgal123 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 I PM'ed you about Hunter . But I really wouldn't worry about it. Until the official notification comes (which you said shouldn't be for another few weeks), you're not going to have to worry about accepting or declining your admission. And your Lehman decision could very well come before then! I can't imagine you'll have to decide about Hunter before hearing from Lehman, so you should be fine. Congrats!!!
Ms.slp Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 This is my second year applying so I am not surprised that I haven't heard from LIU-Brooklyn. I was told via phone that I was on the waitlist and then I received my rejection the day before my birthday last year (5/10). I did know people who were accepted though and found out last February. The only reason I am not surprised we haven't heard back yet is because all NY schools were allegedly suppose to notify all applicants at the same time. This is what I was told at my NYMC interview and I can't help to think that it may be true because we haven't heard from most NY schools yet and last year people heard much earlier. I called today and the lady said supposedly about a month . When you received your notification last year was it online or by mail?
tlsstc Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 I had an interview at Queens yesterday and they said they would start notifying at the beginning of April - between April 1 and April 15.

Just curious, did you contact Hunter first to inquire about your application status or did they randomly message you?

mystiqueSLP Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Is anyone seriously considering NYU/attending the admitted students luncheon? And has anyone seen anything on Albert about their financial aid package?
clydeyo12 Posted March 20, 2013 Author Posted March 20, 2013 I am considering NYU but I still have to hear back from other schools. I'm worried about how much time I'll have to make a decision once I hear from them. No info on Albert about financial aid for me yet. I have an exam the day of the luncheon and won't be able to go. I have also heard they aren't very accommodating about scheduling individual tours. I would really like to talk to alums or current students. Do you think they would put us in touch with someone if we asked?

jcspeech Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 For those of you accepted to Adelphi, how were you notified and did your online status change? Thanks!! I called Adelphi 2 weeks ago and they told me they were on spring break last week so they would restart sending out decisions this week. It's making me crazy though to wait so long. Good luck everyone! Ms.slp 1
kelleyke Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 For adelphi I received my waitlist letter in the mail. Nothing has changed on the website. For anyone accepted at CUNY Brooklyn, did you have an interview? sugarmilk 1

jcspeech Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Hi Jcspeech! How were you notified by Hofstra that you were accepted? Thanks Well I got an email asking me to set up my password and it gave me a username so I called and they told me I was accepted and I should receive the decision letter in the next few days... I'm just so relieved to hear that I was accepted I couldn't even believe it. You should definitely give them a call!
hopefulslp88 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 (edited) Ok so when I got home today I called some schools.... NYMC- we should start hearing in 1-2 weeks, they said that we would receive an email stating that a decision was made and will be sent via mail, our status would not change online. Stockton- We should hear within the next 2 weeks. Adelphi- I spoke to earlier in the week, I was told it could take up to a month to hear back, they have 800 applications and my application was still circulating. LIU Brooklyn- A friend was told 2 weeks and I was told it could be up to 4 more weeks, who knows.... St. John's- I have yet to hear from them, but know many people who have. I was told my app was in the final stage of review and has been for a while. If I do not hear next week, I should call them. Kean- 4-6 weeks... St. Rose- I was told decisions were going to be made by last week and we should start hearing back this week, yet to happen lol... Hofstra- Decisions were starting to be sent out and I should hear within the next week... Just thought I'd pass along any pertinent information.... Edited March 22, 2013 by hopefulslp88

Hey Hopeful, Thanks for sharing all this great info!! I cannot believe Adelphi got 800 applications, that is insane!!! I hope we hear back from them in less than a month, that seems way too long off!!

That's a little ridiculous. I just looked back and in one of the first emails they sent me it says decisions are usually sent in 3-5 weeks. 7 weeks have gone by and they're claiming another 4-6? I find that to be really frustrating since most schools require deposits down by April 15th, so apparently its likely that we don't have all of our decisions by then. I'm hoping that by some miracle some of these schools just end up sending decisions earlier haha
ald360 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Is anyone else still waiting to hear from Seton Hall?! I completed my application in early December, sent them syllabi from a few of my pre-req courses, and they told me my application had been reviewed about a month ago, I'm getting so nervous!

slpf13 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 It looks like SUNY New Paltz is doing rounds of decisions. I made it on the wait list, so now it's just a matter of luck and waiting.. I checked the website first, and then they sent me an email. GL to those of you who applied!
