I haven't heard back from anyone in my other thread. i attended columbia's event today. there were about 20 of us there, so i imagine there will be quite a few more at the event next weekend!

I'm really surprised I was accepted, I thought I would have been rejected (maybe wait-listed) for sure! Does anyone know when we get the financial aid package? I'm extremely conflicted and not sure... but either way I'm putting down my deposit (as terrible as that is). I have an assistantship interview in June, and if were to get it I'll pretty much definitely go. I still might go if I don't get the assistantship, but I'm not completely sure yet. I'm hopefully visiting both UConn and Montclair this week to get a better feel of both programs. How about you, have you decided between NYU and Montclair?

I'm scheduled to go and see UConn on Wednesday, and emailed someone at Montclair and she's seeing if she can set up for the GA to show me around on Thursday. So that's what the ideal would be haha. Does it bother you at all that Montclair's program is longer? (2.5 years + 2 summers). I'll admit this is a deterrent for me as far as their program goes.
madisonstarr Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 For all Montclair SLP applicants, incase you were wondering about GAship (I attended as an undergrad) 15-18 people were emailed for an interview. There are somewhere between 5-7 spots available. If you GET a GAship you'll be expected to work 20hours a week for a Comm Disorders professor and in exchange you get your first year tuition waived as well as a stipend. Also, interviews will be in MAY not june, there was a typo I believe, but email Valerie to double check. I hope that helps people in the decision making process for schools.

It may be the lack of information on the website but I'm not too impressed with what it has to offer in terms of clinical experience and research labs at the moment but I hope visiting will change my mind! Supposedly M.A. is better for if you want to be in a school setting, while M.S. is better for a hospital setting. That being said it seems like whether you have an M.A. or M.S. isn't a huge factor in hiring, but I obviously don't know for sure. That's what I've heard though. And oh ok, that makes sense. For out of field around 3 years either way sounds right. And I agree, it'd be wonderful not to have to spend every summer in class haha. But I've kind of come to terms with being alright with summers (since a lot of programs I applied to require it), but I'm iffy on a whole extra semester. Not only is it extra time spent in school, but it's half a year that I'll be paying tuition instead of having a salary. I don't know... I'm undecided on how big of a deal it is to stay a little bit longer. It just seems weird to me that their program is longer, when a program like William Paterson (which doesn't seem to be the most desirable/competitive), is only 2 years. At least soon enough we'll all know what we're doing

NYU isn't a 3 year program unless you don't have the pre-.reqs. Typically 2.5 years for normal CSD students. NYU does not have any required summer sessions.

I think at this point they have already determined the people who are candidates for GA positions in the speech clinic. I do know though that there are other positions available elsewhere on campus. From what I've heard, the speech program is highly regarded among all the departments and other departments are always eager to take on GAs from the speech program. I don't think you'd have a problem getting an assistantship, as long as you don't mind doing it in an unrelated area. Some people I know in the speech program have assistantships that they love with the education program. Edited April 9, 2013 by clydeyo12
