iphi Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I see a lot about April 15 being the deadline to accept an offer. Is this the case for all schools? I am waiting on one last decision (my top choice, of course) and wonder if it is ok to reach out to them. If April 15 really is the deadline, then asking for a decision from them less than 1 month beforehand doesn't seem too unreasonable. I emailed the general admissions office and got a "you'll know when you know" response and I want to know when it's ok to email someone in the department I actually applied to.
kabelo Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Absolutely. That's what I did and I got polite replies, telling me my admission status. iphi 1
Nerd_For_Life Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Might want to check that it applies to the school you're contacting(in case you've applied to schools outside the US or schools that are known not to abide by that deadline)
anthropologygeek Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 That deadline is for funding offers only not admissions
iphi Posted March 18, 2013 Author Posted March 18, 2013 That deadline is for funding offers only not admissions Er, aren't funding offers typically sent after admission offers?

This is a public university, so I feel fairly confident that they will adhere to the "norm" but would love to confirm if possible.
sweetpearl16 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Here is a link to the CGS resolution http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/entsup/resolution.pdf. If your school appear on this list, then they abide by the April 15 agreement. rool37 and iphi 2
Faraday Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Er, aren't funding offers typically sent after admission offers? It will vary among different programs. All of mine for example included funding information with admissions offers. Either way the intention of the deadline is the same. The "gentleman’s agreement" between almost all major universities is such that if they make you an offer with funding, they must keep that funding opportunity on the table until April 15th. This is to prevent a school from making you an offer in February and saying, "You are accepted with XXX funding. Decide within a week or you will lose that funding..." iphi 1

I see, thank you for the clear explanation!
