So, I made a poll yesterday (http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/41619-what-is-your-stipend-and-how-do-you-make-it-work/) inquiring about the average stipend per person.... I'd like to go a little more in depth now, taking into account field of study and cost of living in your city.

First, the field of study is broken down into 3 categories (from academic discipline descriptions on wikipedia:

1) Humanities/Arts: History, Linguistics, Literature, Performing arts, Philosophy, Religion, Visual Arts

2) Social Sciences: Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural/Ethnic studies, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology

3) Science/Math/Tech/Engineering: Astronomy, Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Engineering

Next, Under each of the three academic disciplines, there are options to choose your stipend range based off of the Cost of Living Index found HERE--> http://www.infoplease.com/business/economy/cost-living-index-us-cities.html .... Please click this link and find whatever city you are in (it looks like most cities containing major universities are on the list) and look at the first column labeled, "100% Composite Index" ... Select your answer based off of the number in the composite index for your city.

I have broken this down into 4 choices:

- <100

- 100-114

- 115-130

- >130

This is the most in depth I can make a survey on these forums, given the 3 question, 20 choice maximum.

Because you have to answer every question, I had to modify the first category of <$15K for each Field of Study.... Please answer correctly for your Field and then select the first option "Mark this if you're not in this field" for the other two!

Wow, clearly you are into stats! ;)

Unfortunately I tried to answer the poll but I must answer all three questions (otherwise it appears "error") but my answering the three questions may temper your results. :(

This is actually a great idea. If enough people answer, we can get an idea of distribution by field. My stipend is going to change when I leave my current Masters for PhD... so it will be more. However, I'll still be living with pretty much identical expendable income at the end of the month. LOL

biotechie: agreed! some good lookin' charts and graphs are definitely going to come out of this poll if we get enough responses. mmmm, color-coding.

Having a Masters vs PhD option would also be great...but would be much uglier to look at! Thanks for putting this together!

I agree, but its limited to 3 questions and 20 choices per question on these forums, so I'm already at the maximum survey length.

Yes it is, it's 122

Weird. I Cmd+F'd for it several times before posting, and nothing showed up. But, thanks!

Edit: Aha! It's written "New, Haven, CT" and I was searching for "New Haven."

  • 2 weeks later...

Yes, all the two-word cities have a comma in between the words for some reason.  Took me a while to find Orange County this way, which, by the way, is the highest I saw by browsing, and 146.4%.  Anyone have higher than that?!?

Also, I don't know about others, but I have a different amount in the first year than others.  I went with the base stipend and not the added first year fellowship funds and did not include summer funding, which is not guaranteed all years.

Edit: Aha, San Francisco and San Jose are higher - makes sense!

New York (Manhattan) is higher, at 216.7%.  So are Queens and Brooklyn actually.

If I had a choice, I would not want to do grad school here.  I love Columbia but I hate New York's cost of living.

Also, I went with my institutional stipend and not my NSF stipend, which is slightly lower (only slightly, but enough to put me in a lower bracket).
