Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU and University of Washington

Recommended Posts

I was thinking I would hear this week as well! I emailed admissions and it seems that they are on Spring Break, so I am guessing that may have delayed  notifications.

Is NYU your first choice? What are you hoping to focus on?

Good luck to you as well!

Ah spring break, of course. Hopefully we'll hear early next week then! I have been accepted to two other programs so far (one PhD and one MA), waitlisted at one, and am waiting on a couple others. I'm not sure if NYU would be my first choice or not... it depends on what (if any) funding I get. I have a lot of interests when it comes to media, technology and culture, so I'm not sure what my focus would be exactly, but I'm interested in CMC and how our online identities and interactions are impacting our interpersonal relationships. I'm also interested in media and technology saturation in contemporary culture and how new media and their platforms are shaping post-postmodern American culture. Kind of broad, I know, but I'm hoping to narrow my focus in grad school with the eventual goal of getting a PhD and becoming a professor. What are you interested in? Fingers crossed for us both and hang in there as we wait!!

Greetings,

I was wondering if either of you (or anybody) has heard anything back yet? On the MCC website it is written that admittance decisions should be out by Thursday; however, I've noted that at least one person has already posted that they've been accepted on the results board. Anybody else heard anything? Oh the joys of waiting.

Thanks.

Greetings,

Alas...still waiting. I wonder if when they said "let applicants know by Thursday" they actually meant "will let applicants know at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday." I'm trying to remain somewhat optimistic but am beginning to resign myself to expecting the worst. I've been resisting the urge to just pick up the phone and call. But wait we must, hopefully we'll all hear pretty soon, and hopefully we'll all hear good news. I'll admit I feel a bit better knowing that other people are still waiting to hear back, perhaps they just got held up. Please post if you hear anything. And my apologies to CaitlinMarie but I don't have any helpful info about their funding scheme, as best as I can tell most of NYU's MA programs are more-or-less unfunded. Good luck to us all.

Greetings,

Like media/comm hopeful I received a basic acceptance note, with no funding information. Now I just need to figure out how to pay for it. Perhaps I'll see some of you in the Fall. Good luck to all of you.

@Nowaynohow, would you suggest emailing them? Are you paying a 1/3 tuition or did they give you funding up to a third of the cost of tuition. Also, is you RA thing as a resident advisor or research assistant?

Thanks for the advice! I am really hoping to go but I definitely need a scholarship of some sort! SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS!

Wondering for those who got accepted what if any funding you have received. I got a $10K scholarship ($5K per semester) plus the option of work study ($3K) and some subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Not sure if it's going to be enough of a scholarship to make it really feasible for me to go... did others receive funding packages?

I was offered the same. But, I am contemplating whether the debt is worth. it Most of the loans have fairly high interest rates and non-defered payments. It means interest would be accruing for 2 years. The cost for the MA would most certainly double when all is said and done. As someone who wants to pursue a PhD, that is a lot of debt to accumulate so early on. I wouldn't be able to being paying any of it back for at least 7 years. Based on rough calculations, I suspect I would be paying it off the rest of my life, or at least most of my career. I love the program, but not sure if it is worth the debt.

I applied to all MA programs not really considering the lack of funding. Perhaps I should wait another year, build up experience, and apply directly to PhD programs. It is better financially. Such a hard situation!!!

Any words of wisdom/advice would be welcome from others currently pursuing PhDs or hoping to pursue a PhD...
