Got accepted by BC and Candler to ThM at the moment, though It is pretty tough for me to make any decision right now.

BC offers me a scholarship with 25% tuition. I have not received any information about what the financial aid for me with Candler. Now the thing is that I need to make decision before the 4th on whether to accept the admission from Candler or not maybe before knowing anything about the aid. I hope they could offer me some money at least, but here is what the director said: ThM scholarships are limited and competitive.

My focus is biblical studies. Frankly I would prefer Candler if money is not a problem. Boston College certainly is a good school to go too because of the environment around it and the school itself. My goal is to continue and get my doctoral degree later. Therefore it is another thing I am thinking about.

Now I just don't know what to do anymore. Does anyone have good idea or know anything about the scholarship in Candler? Or anything about the two schools.

Thanks a lot!

It sounds to me like you do not have all of the information that you need to make a decision. Can you wait until next Monday (April 1) and then follow up by phone with the other programs? If you let them know about your circumstances and the need to make a decision by April 4, they may be able to tell you what you need to know. For now, which program is your first choice? How important is funding? What will you decide if you get in everywhere but the only $ is the 25% from BC? That's a real possibility because most ThM programs are not funded. does the money change your decision? Or is 25% tuition not enough to make a difference? In which case, where do you want to go? And if money is an issue, which degrees cost less overall? Including cost of living in the area as well as tuition and other costs/opportunities. I think BC and BU are both good schools, Duke is top-tier but does not fund ThMs at all. If you're looking for future possibilities and doctoral options, then pick the best school that you can. Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the information. I just did not know that ThM is not funded!! Actually funding is quite important to me though. With more funding, it is easier for me to secure a student visa. And also, the cost is way a lot though. Therefore, money does change my decision. Frankly, I want  to go to Atlanta because I am interested in studies of the Hebrew Bible and there is one professor there whose study I am quite interested in. Of course Boston College is a great school too. But now, funding will help me make decision I guess. I will just wait and see whether there is a school that would fund me more~

Hi kareniskimova,

Glad to hear you made it into a few ThM programs! :) I totally understand your wish to go Candler for Hebrew Bible; I think their HB faculty just rocks. Which professor are you interested in?

Don't lose hope yet; and if you're a religious person, then, keep praying :) I know that Candler and Duke offers a full-tuition scholarship for international ThM students, but as the director said, they're really really competitive. I think Duke dishes out only one of those each year, and I wouldn't be surprised if the stats are in the same neighbourhood for Candler.

Keep us updated!

That's true. If you are an international student, Duke offers one fully-funded ThM unit ion scholarship. I know their admissions committee has already met. Have you heard anything from DDS yet?

Unit ion? The was supposed to say tuition! Darn autofill :)

A lot of schools treat ThM programs as piggy banks, but I've got my fingers crossed that the Duke funding package is yours.

Hi Cadences,

Thanks for bring me all the information and cheering me up with hope~

I do want to go to Candler comparing to BC. Prof. Jacob Wright is the one that I am interested in.  His doctoral thesis is quite related to what I want to do. But at the same time, I was thinking that Boston might be a better location with lots of resources gathered. Actually I am just pretty content with what I have received so far. The only problem might be money. As I have said, money pretty much decides where I will go in the end. But at the moment lacking of information kinda torments me. Hope God could help me with the problem!

Not at the moment la. They just asked for one endorsement letter several times. After all that was done, nothing~

Kareniskimova, good luck! If you get the international scholarship from Duke, it will cover most of your tuition. :) where are you coming from? And what's your academic background? Kuriakos, what's the size of a typical DDS ThM class? And what sorts of people do the degree? It's expensive! Also, any word on where you're going next year yet? I hope you get into the programs you want.

There are no separate ThM courses. You can fill your degree with M* courses (both from the Div School and the Religion department), you can get permission to participate in doctoral seminars, and/or you can do 1 or 2 directed studies. I did all doctoral seminars and 1 directed study (a requirement for the thesis option).

It sound like I am accepted by Duke. But the thing is, I have not heard anything from them  after turning in the material they want. I am from China. I currently have two MA in religious studies and theological studies and one BA in philosophy~ Trying to get a ThM then apply for PhD. still long way to go~

Thanks, Kuriakos. By class, I meant the entering cohort. I saw the stats in the bulletin that say there are 23 ThM students currently registered, I'm expecting that means an incoming class of maybe 15? Also, it says 20 men and 3 women which seems a little odd to me. I guess I'll figure it out in a few months. For the doctoral seminars, did you end up going to the religion department? I didn't see a whole lot of doctoral level courses listed in next year's calendar. Unless the 9** level courses are all doctoral?

Oh, yes, that makes a lot more sense. PM Sent.

Received a letter from Candler saying that they offered me a scholarship of $ 12,000. That is more than BC and Candler is the school I want to go, so...

Congrats! I didn't think either school gave any money out at all (except for the one international scholarship)!
