Very Confused: Toronto Vs CMU LTI vs wait listed

Hi Prospective Grads!

I have had a crazy application season like many of you. I just want to post this out there to see if anyone has some thoughts. I am a EE undergrad majot with a MS in computer science. After working in the industry for 4 and half years I applied for a phd.

My area of interest is NLP and Machine Learning. I have been accepted into U Toronto, with funding and into the MS MTI at CMU.

Does anyone know if an MS admit in CMU means you will be accepted into the phd also? I dont want another masters for sure!

Also, Toronto seems to be expensive, I have been offered funding but I guess in Canada the school expects you to pay in-state tuition. Does anyone know just exactly how poor I would be if I accept Toronto :)

To make things more complecated I am wait listed in a JHU and NYU. I have been talking to profs at both places and I basically get the same information everytime. "I am a strong candidate bla bla bla, but we dont know for sure at this point .."

Anyone else in this situation? Anyone ever got an accept after being wait  listed? I hate being in limbo! I also feel bad for others who are waitlisted because I am also holding on my decision untill other schools confirm my acceptance.

U Toronto is a great school. You should check funding offer versus cost of living and other expenses in Toronto. You could probably get that information from current CS graduate students at Toronto U.

There is no sense accepting a MS offer if you have already an MS - it is just a waste of your time.

Did you tell the universities that you are wait-listed on that you have other accept offers from reputable universities? I have heard it could probably bring you to the top of the wait list and increase your acceptance chances.

Anyway I suggest you wait at least untill the acceptance notification deadline at Toronto U, and maybe try to talk to POI to try to get better funding.

Best of Luck.

I accepted an offer for an MS at UofT.  My interests are in NLP and Machine Learning too.  Did you get accepted in the NLP lab or machine learning?  I think the tuition for Canadians is about 7000 and more for international.

Also the Masters at CMU are unfunded correct?  From the other Canadian schools I got into, the UofT offer was the best for funding.
