Blake091 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 My "registration information" tab appeared on March 28 and disappeared today. It's the only change that's occurred so far on my infoweb account. I'm totally antsy and paranoid now! Mine disappeared and then came back when they updated it for the acceptance. So hopefully you'll hear soon!
thunderchunky Posted April 6, 2013 Author Posted April 6, 2013 Since I know you were all on the edge of your seats, my infoweb account was finally updated today. I guess someone was working overtime! Still waiting for the official offer now.

Still waiting for the official offer now. Same with me! I got an email an hour ago. So weird as I wasn't even checking my infoweb on the weekend. Haha. I'm also accepted into the Master of Public Administration. I hope we hear about funding soon!

I already declined their offer, best of luck to everyone else!

I already declined their offer, best of luck to everyone else! I didn't get a pdf yet. It only said this: Congratulations! The University of Ottawa is pleased to admit you in the program of Master of Arts in Public and International Affairs. In the next few days, you will receive your official offer of admission. Please read it carefully. You should also consult your InfoWeb account to obtain all the details regarding your offer of admission. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to communicate with your academic unit. Thank you again for your interest in the University of Ottawa.

thunderchunky Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 I finally received my official offer by email today.
rmrda Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Hi guys! I received my official offer today. I'm kind of freaking out because I don't know what to do. And yes, it may seem silly (first world problems anyone?) but I need some advice and who better to give it than an internet forum. ;-) (In truth, I just want as much input as possible as my boyfriend/family know nothing about grad school so you guys might have a better idea). So without further ado, HELP ME! So I'm stuck between a few different options (all of them in Ottawa). I turned down Osgoode law school and Queen's joint law-MPA program last week since I decided that I wanted to live in Ottawa. My current choices: - U of O joint law program with NPSIA (the catch is that I haven't yet been accepted into U of O law) - the positives are that it seems like a fantastic program where you get to learn both the law and policy side which I'm interested, the negatives are that it will take me 4 years and a lot of money, obviously, this is not really an option until I'm accepted but I'm still keeping it on this list - NPSIA - currently I'm accepted into the joint program which means my acceptance to NPSIA is for Fall 2014, not Fall 2013. Tabbatha has told me that based on my qualifications I will be admitted to the Fall 2013 for the Master's if I'm not accepted into the law school. However, they have not assessed me for funding since funding is assessed for each year and I was not slated to start until the following year. Essentially, if I don't get into law school, I'd be going to NPSIA without any funding. - GSPIA - I just got the letter today and I got full funding! This makes my decision more difficult as NPSIA was always my top choice but I think GSPIA is also a great option and with that big of difference in funding, I'm not sure I can pass it up. What would you do? What do you think I should do? I'm from Alberta, currently living in Vancouver and the only thing I currently know is that next fall I'll be studying in Ottawa. I just don't know what! Any help/insight/guidance any of you can give would much appreciated. TLDR: Study at NPSIA with no funding or GSPIA with full funding?

When do you have to notify NPSIA and GSPIA of your decision? The good thing is you're able to narrow down the city you are going to live in. Congrats on the full funding! For me, funding would make a huge difference. I've heard that uOttawa's reputation has been building steadily over the last few years, and a few profs have really become well-known. However, it is true that Carleton's reputation precedes itself. Would you choose GSPIA if the funding offer wasn't as good? Would you still want to go to NPSIA if you didn't get into law school? Also, if anyone is still curious, I have still not received any updates via InfoWeb or email about my GSPIA application. I don't think this is a good sign.

I am sorry you haven't heard yet, I am hoping for you! That was the hard thing about posting this, I didn't want to be insensitive as I recognize how fortunate I am to be accepted into any grad program and I know there are still many people waiting (the waiting pain is really getting to me with U of O law as I applied in October!). Anyway, in answer to your questions: I've already paid my deposit to NPSIA. I would need to let GSPIA know by May 3rd in order to keep my funding so I do have a bit more time. I do think funding is a huge factor. I honestly was not thinking too much about funding because I applied to law schools/grad programs that are not traditionally known for funding and since I'm not interested in the traditional academic masters, I had just accepted that I would be going into debt. However, now that I actually have a funding, it seems to have changed my perspective a little. Especially, if I do decide to go to law school afterward. It would be good to have little to no debt after my masters. I was a fortunate soul that had a full scholarship for my undergrad in Canada so I don't think I really know what living in debt looks like. In terms of NPSIA, yes I had decided last week without knowing about GSPIA that if I didn't get into U of O for law, that I would go do my Masters first. That is why I chose to turn down my Queen's and Osgoode acceptances. Anyway, if anyone else has any thoughts, please feel free to chime in! Once again, I apologize if these questions are insensitive but I'm just looking for feedback from some people that have clearly been thinking long and hard about grad school like myself. Thanks!
thunderchunky Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) The way I see it, the first thing you must do is answer the question that no one else can answer for you: Do I want to be a lawyer? If you're still uncertain about the answer then I strongly suggest you reconsider law school, because the time, money and effort it takes to go to law school is absolutely no joke. You had better not take that on unless you are sure that is the career you want. As far as choosing between GSPIA and NPSIA, here are the main factors I am currently weighing: funding scheme job opportunities post-grad opportunity to do a master's thesis opportunity to pursue a specialized field opportunity to participate in co-op program opportunity to participate in international exchange quality of professors program culture language requirement opportunity to study in French campus location Edited April 9, 2013 by thunderchunky jkh26 and rmrda 2
Rumcajs Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) Go to GSPIA with full funding. At the end of the day the opportunity cost of passing up on a full ride over the prestige and perhaps the better job is far too small. Wouldn't you rather be spending money on vacations, a better standard of living, or acquiring savings for the future than tuition? Edited April 9, 2013 by Rumcajs jkh26, kdav, Blake091 and 1 other 4
jkh26 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Hey guys! After weeks of anticipation and days of mild anxiety I finally received word that I was accepted into the GSPIA while at work today. Although I have no funding, I am relieved. I will likely accept GSPIA, unless a miracle happens and my Carleton application is moved from "hold" to "accepted." Thanks for the words of encouragement! thunderchunky and kdav 2
Martinitown Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I was in the Grad office last Friday the 5th and I saw all the acceptance/conditional letters laid out on the desks. They get printed there and then passed up to the GSPIA office to be sent. So I assume this week first round is going out. They are having another Grad council meeting on the 24th to choose more applicants. I hope this helps.

Basically it tells you that you can pay via online or telephone banking (Not credit, debit or cheque) and that all you need to do is add the University of Ottawa as a payee on your online banking and then use your student number and pay the $500. For me, it's essentially the same way that I paid tuition to my undergrad institution. I hope that makes sense :-)
