Thank you CanMPH2014! I think I read that students are sometimes stipend for their practicum, whereas other schools don't. They also have the distance program. Those could be possible reasons why it is popular.

After scouring the 2013 thread for when people began receiving acceptance (or rejection) letters and reading through the 2014 thread I finally decided to post.

Congrats to those of you who have alredy recieved a letter of acceptance! The waiting is starting to get to me, and I know that it is still before most schools begin accepting people.

I've applied to SFU, UofA, and UofS. UofA still says "decision pending," UofS says "complete and ready for review" (I didn't finish my application until end of February, so might take awhile), and the SFU website doesn't have a status that I can find. I received and email from them stating that they needed my official transcripts, which ended up just being filed under my first name by accident. However, their website says that they do not confirm whether or not they have recieved official transcripts, but that "successful applicants" will be notified of missing documents, so that got my hopes up for SFU a bit!

One worry that I have though, is that an SFU MPH student posted some pretty bad things about the SFU program is last year's thread, trying to find it. But basically said that the class sizes are too big, many classe are taught by TAs and not PhD profs, lack of a connection with faculty, etc. Is anybody able to wiegh in with their experience at SFU?

**EDIT** Found it:

Those are some good points, IAmMPH.  It still surprises me that the number of applicants for U Sask surpasses both UBC and U of T.

Congrats, IAmMPH!  I wonder what is the major factor that makes U Sask so popular.

Well there popular now because they are accredited, otherwise there program is nothing special. You have to find your own practicum, the professors are not specialized, some aren't even professors. The set up of the program is horrible. There extremely unorganized. And they say that 700 people apply (to acquire popularity), but really they only get like 200, if that! I applied late, and still got in. Around 70-80% of the class is immigrants. It's expensive, practicums aren't paid, It's LONG...most go for almost more than 2-3 years. They treat there students like little kids. Wouldn't recommend this school program to anyone, it is way to new.

My documents finally have showed up on the USask website! Since the March 1st deadline it was incomplete, now it is finally ready to be reviewed. Hopefully others will be the same boat. They probably do go as someone said, first come first served. USask is the 3rd largest school of public health in Canada so it is popular. Hang in there everyone!

You have made some interesting points there. But I don't know how "Around 70-80% of the class is immigrants" is relevant to the actual program. If anything, it brings diversity and perspective, something that the field of Public Health supports and advocates for.

Are you in the program? Could you provide more insight? What are the courses like? From what I heard it is aligned with the CDC in the USA and students are able to do their practicums there which sounds like a great opportunity.

I agree with what you are saying. It sounds like the poster sees USask as a bad program because of the people they admit. From what I have seen on the website, a list of alumni from the class of 2013, most of them are from Canada of different ethnic backgrounds. Not immigrants.

You can do your practicum in States or Europe. That is only benefit. Otherwise, it is a money grabbing program for spoiled little rich kids. And yes most are immigrants, because immigrants have to PAY MORE MONEY!!!!! AKA INTERNATIONAL STUDENT= MORE MONEY!!!

I completely agree with you. Even if there are individuals who are immigrants or international students in the program, which I believe there should be, it should not be considered as something negative. As I mentioned previously, it brings perspective and diversity.

Gathering from what you are saying, I guess every single program and university in Canada is for "spoiled little rich kids". Saying this program is for "spoiled little rich kids" is a false claim as Canada provides financial support to students who need it, i.e. OSAP/student loans. Canada has the highest rate of students graduating from Post-Secondary in the world and it's not because this program and other graduate programs are just for "spoiled little rich kids".

Hello to all....

Just wanna share a piece of information with you guys.

I had a word with U of A's prog coordinator (for Health policy and management) and she said early offers will be sent by end of March[while last year forum show students not getting any response till 15th May].

Grad admin from UBC's MHA program said we should expect replies by early April.

I still haven't found anyone applying for UBC's MHA program or UofT's MHSC- IHPME prog. No concerned forum or blog. Do anybody have friends or known awaiting reply for these programs?  Can you guys help me with any Forum for Canada;s MHA applicants fall 2014 as well?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

From what I understand and have read from previous years, it takes about a couple weeks for the CGSR to review recommended applications and once they have been approved, you receive a confirmation/acceptance email. Hope this helps, and if anyone knows more about the process, please add.

Do u mean by this that they will review the application again and will decided?....is there  a chance for rejection again ?

Congratulations to all those who have received acceptances! :)  If you have multiple ones, good luck deciding between your offers. :)

I think they review the application again. But if  the department recommended you for admission, I would think that it is unlikely that CGSR would reject you.

Hi friends,

I know most people here are applicants of MPH. Congratulations and best wishes to all applicants.

But is there anyone has applied MSc/Phd in health research?

I applied UofT (IHPME-MSc in HSR), McMaster (MSc in HRM), and UofA (MSc in HTA), and haven't heard anything back.

Any information? Thanks! :)

I was just recommended for admission to Uvic's MPH program! Deadline to make decision is April 2nd. Still waiting on SFU.

And if you don't mind, could you share your stats?

This is probably ridiculously pathetic but I think my heart just broke realizing that I'm most likely not getting into UVic if offers went out today. Don't think my research is something they are interested in on top of the fact that I barely have a 91 average. Not very hopeful for lakehead either. Pretty hefty dose of reality right here.

f*ck.

Don't give up yet!  Lakehead has a rolling admissions system so there's still a good chance that you'll get in  :)
