cool90068 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 So - I've been wait listed at my #1 top choice. Is there anything that I can do to help my chances? Has anyone else been in this situation before? Is anyone else in this situation?
jkroman Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Yeah, I found out that I too am wait listed. She told me that people on the wait list do often receive admissions offers, but that was all the details I got. I am really hoping I am high up on the list, but I have no way of knowing.... would it be rude to ask? It seems like it would be. They said that I would be told after the April 15th deadline for acceptance/rejection by the applicant. So.... I guess I will be biting my nails for the next 3 weeks.
RKSim Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 You guys have it easy! I am on the waiting list at my top three schools, and my 4th pick accepted me. hahaha. Though, on the bright side, I haven't been rejected yet. I sent letters to each school letting them know that I am still interested and would like to remain on the waitlist. I also had another reference call in to one of the schools.
caro Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Hi guys On MFA waitlists, I am fairly sure that they usually are not strictly ranked (I worked in an MFA admissions office for a couple of months). They generally will pick people from the waitlist that correspond to people who have declined to enroll, in terms of work, gender, etc. Since it is such a careful balancing act to pick a class of MFA students, they try to use the waitlist to keep that balance in place. By the way, many people get in from waitlists! I went to Yale a number of years ago, and at that time there were always one or two people who came in off the waitlist. But I know people who have gone there more recently, and I have heard that there are now a lot of people there who had been waitlisted...and as far as I can tell, these make up some of the best students. I think with the wide variety of schools now available, and the large number of schools applied to by applicants, waitlisted candidates have a better chance than ever. Anyway good luck and don't be discouraged.
cool90068 Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 Thanks everyone for your insights. I wrote to the admissions office and found out that I was 'definitely at the top of the list' and that I would be notified in a couple of weeks or as soon as a space opened up. We'll see...
jkroman Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Does anyone know if you make if off the wait list and are accepted, do you receive less funding than those that were not on the wait list at all? Or more generally are there any negatives to having been wait listed before offered acceptance?
mtung Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Does anyone know if you make if off the wait list and are accepted, do you receive less funding than those that were not on the wait list at all? Or more generally are there any negatives to having been wait listed before offered acceptance? I'd like to know the same! I just got waitlisted at RISD, and it came as a total surprise, because they didn't invite me for an interview (and I know they require interviews)...it's a weird place to be. I'm thrilled to have made it onto the waitlist, but now it complicates my decision process. I was pretty much set to accept Hunter's offer once I heard back from SAIC (where I also interviewed), but now I feel like I should wait as long as possible to see what RISD says, eventhough I had written them off as a rejection based on lack on interview...
mtung Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Also, what is the best way to approach schools you have been waitlisted at? I heard via post today, and am planning on calling to let them know I am still very much interested and also find out if there is a ranking and where my place is. I have 3 weeks before I need to notify Hunter, but my guess is I won't be hearing anything from RISD until after the 15th...
aimelie Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I too got into waiting list at Cranbrook. I am so anxious because cranbrook is top of my wish list. I don't know how many chances I have.... who will turn down cranbrook??? They told me that they will reconsider it at 20April but I am not sure when they will send me their final decision. How long should I wait? I also don't know how many people got into the waiting list and which order I am in?? Do you guys know if I should call them to ask? Is it okay to ask about my chances ? How to ask politely? Please help!! But I notice that most waiting list got accepted... Is it a good sign? =)
libbybarbee Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 I think that it is probably a good idea to call or write and politely ask if they can give you any additional information. If nothing else, it tells them that you are interested. I too got into waiting list at Cranbrook. I am so anxious because cranbrook is top of my wish list. serigrafista Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I was waitlisted three place. One just accepted me, one just rejected me, and I still haven't heard from another. I think that should sum it up. With my programs, they're really small, so if you're waitlisted, you really do have a chance of getting in. But when they're full, they're full. You know?
torontoMFA Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 ouf! i've been waitlisted at Parsons and its driving me insane. anyone heard anything from them yet?
