To be honest I have to do a good bit of thinking about all of the programs.  Specifically, where they would land me coming out of a PhD. I have a good handle of how well each program fits my research, but it's going to come down to the placement of students coming out of the program and the connections that each university/program/POI has. Important for the career path etc etc.

Congrats to those that have received offers!

Wander, I don't know about you, but out of your schools Coumbia would def be my top list - especially if you want to do anything hydroclimate related to what Richard Seager has done!

Anyone here the person who posted the Scripps admission?

Has anyone heard anything from Oregon State?

No decisions have been made yet so far as I can tell. Last I heard they were, like most schools still, in the process of reviewing applications. So the committee may have met, and applications may have been parsed out to respective POI for consideration, and that's where they sit at the moment.

Columbia is definitely a great program that fits my research interests well, but I've not yet heard from them officially. Doing my best to keep a lid on spinning off into "what-if" daydreams (or nightmares depending on my mood). Seems to me that I'm most stressed, and waste the most time, when I let myself start wandering down those paths.

Considering your profile, I'm willing to bet you'll get an offer from Columbia.

How come?

I'm not one to collect acceptances/rejections. The schools i cut off my list are schools i wont considering going to no matter what.

Did you just send an email to the graduate coordinator?  How did you do it?  I'm thinking of withdrawing my application from UNR.

I did the same with a school on my list that contacted me.  I knew there was no way I'd attend there so I told them that.  Its a good thing to do as it makes their decision making process simpler instead of waiting for a decline.

Very considerate.   I highly advise all other applicants applying to the same schools as me to withdraw their applications ASAP.    :)

na, but if I get accepted at the pick of mine (with funding)  I'd do the same.

It is considerate to withdraw for other people's sake, but I don't understand why you'd do the initial application if you wouldn't go there no matter what...

Was it for having a safety net?

I would have gone to those places if one of my top choices didnt admit me.

Maybe you find out more about the specifics of what your time in a program would be like (eg the project/advisor you wanted isn't available). Maybe your partner says "there's no way I'm moving to Dodge City," or you realize you aren't so keen on the location either. Maybe a family member gets sick and you decide that you need to go to school somewhere where the flights are a little less expensive to get home. Lots of things can change about your personal or academic life in the third of a year between starting applications and starting to hear from schools.

I can't speak for others, but on my initial ranking the school I withdrew my application from was definitely my safety school.  I tried to give myself a wide array of options and while there was interesting research being conducted at this school when compared to the other two offers I've received (and the others I hope to get) there's simply no way I would pick it.

In retrospect, I maybe shouldn't have applied but they waived my application fee so that probably swayed me a bit.  I wasn't all that confident that I was going to get into  great school at the start of the process, though.  My GPA isn't all that great and my math grades were low, so I think it was prudent to have safety schools.

Considering all of the stuff I've seen on here of people not getting in no matter how great their credentials looked, I went with a safety school as well.  I figured that if I didn't get into a PhD, then I would give Masters a go.  The Masters program is doing interesting work so it wouldn't be terrible, but I'm definitely not choosing that over a PhD program.

I also applied to a safety school because one of my LOR, who is also the chair of the department I'm in, took me aside for a 45 minute lecture on how I shouldn't apply to PhD programs because only geniuses go straight to PhD.  I later learned that he had no idea how the process worked now since 1) our department only has a Masters program that's in its baby stages and 2) he graduated over 25 years ago.  Even though I was pretty sure I had a competitive profile (and so far, 1 school agrees), it still made me feel terrible to hear all of that from him.

So...there's another reason why someone would pick a safety school and then withdraw the application after being accepted elsewhere.

my first time around, i did not have safeties, and by pure luck i got into a funded masters program in which they opened the doors for me even though I did not apply on time. You applied very wisely, many talented people get shut out of PhD programs for random reasons.

Nope... a bit disappointed that that means i probably wont get in; but my POIs there funding was dependent on a grant. I actually know someone who did their MS there so its not that weird...

First of all, I should really express my apperciation for creating this topic. I would be thankful if other people (especially experienced ones) could let me know whether I have a chance to get admission from the schools I am applying for:

Undergrad and Gradute Institution: University of Tehran (Best in Iran; who cares?)
Major_Under(s): Surveying and Geomatics Eng
GPA in Major: 3.28
Major_Gradute: Remote sensing

GPA in Major: 4
Position in Class: 7 in 40, I guess!
Type of Student: International-Male

TOEFL score: 104 (R:27 L:25 S:24 W:28)

GRE Scores (revised/old version):
Q: 169
V: 146 (ouch!)
W: 3.0

Research Experience: 2 ISC papers under review process; two SCOPUS published; 8 international conferences and 3 mediocre journals!

My thesis was related to water vapor modeling and atmospheric corrections on InSAR technique.

My research interests are: Cloud/aerosol detection and their properties, GPS and radio meteorology, atmospheric sounding, signal/image processing, time series modeling, ray tracing, artificial intelligence in remote sensing.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA both in courses and teaching relevant software.

 I'm applying to PhD programs

Applying to Where:
University of Maryland: Atmospheric and Oceanic program

University of Colorado State: Atmospheric science

University of Michigan Tech: Atmosheric science

University of Houston: Atmospheric science

University of Huntsville-Alabama: Atmospheric science

Whats your opinion about my application?

I think that UMD and UM are both going to be a stretch for you, but everywhere else should be do able imo. That verbal score should be dispelled by a strong statement of purpose: it really depends on fit and if they want to take on a international students.
