Funding for graduate school in counseling psychology

How possible is it to get funding (tuition waiver + stipend) for graduate study in counseling psychology? I am open for doctoral studies. Schools at New England region will be highly preferred...... 

 

My background is psychology bachelor and 2 year related working experiences.... It seems quite amount of school PhD program asks for Masters as prerequisite.... I cannot afford to pay for tuition and definitely need some sort of funding for graduate studies. Any school suggestions? Thanks!

It's definitely possible to get funding (especially for doc programs). I'm in a counseling psych phd program now and I have guaranteed tuition waiver and stipend for 6 years. I assume most if not all PhD counseling psych programs are like that; the idea is that they won't take you if they can't fund you, it would be irresponsible. Hope this helps!

It's more common in Clinical programs than in Counseling; counseling programs are sometimes housed in the Education department, as opposed to the Psychology department, and funding varies. You may need to check with individual programs.

Many APA-accredited counseling psychology programs have full funding for at least 5 years, but of course it will vary by program.

Also, geographic preferences should probably be down the list when considering programs.  You want the best fit program for your research and professional interests.
