SchoolPsych81 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Does anyone have a suggestion on a good book to read concerning current issues / trends in school psychology? I'd like to learn more about the field and some of its "hot terms" (e.g., RTI, FBA, IEP etc) before interviews. I meant to reply to this a while ago! This summer I read through most of School Psychology for the 21st Century by Merrel, Ervin & Peacock. From what I understand, it is a widely used book in first year school psych programs. I found it really helpful in explaining all the lingo and abbreviations. Also, my first two interviews are this week (one on Thursday and another on Friday). Anyone have any quick tips on how to prepare? What should I wear?

I got that book from the library last week and have been working my way through it. It's super helpful! What schools/geographic region (that will determine what you wear)? Maybe also list the activities (e.g. formal interview, group interview, informal visit, etc). I would make sure you know why you are interested in SP, research you are interested in conducting, and how your interests fit with your POI/the department in general.
iphi Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Also - general tip - BE NICE TO THE GRAD STUDENTS! They have more influence than you think!
girbgirl Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Hi everyone, I'm also applying to school psych programs and just got an interview invite for a masters/specialist program a couple days ago. Out of curiosity, were any of you planning on bringing resumes to give to the faculty members interviewing you?
MN111 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Yes! Definitely do that. My professors said that it is really impressive if you come prepared! Good luck!
iPsych Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Congratulations to all those going on interviews! Best of luck!!

I'm glad it's helpful with lingo explanations because I feel like school psych is a ton of abbreviations like IEP FBA etc that I want to know during interview time And for interview days / open-houses, I feel like that business casual is fine. But I bet some people would disagree with me, and believe that you should dress more formally. Edited January 11, 2014 by mcvcm92
iPsych Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Got my first interview! *happy dance* I also ordered Dr. Branstetter's book and it is GREAT! Very informative without feeling like you're reading a textbook. Edited January 15, 2014 by iPsych

iphi Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Does anyone here want to claim the interview invitation to Wisconsin - Milwaukee?
iphi Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) Got an interview invitation today from UMass Boston! Is anyone else interviewing there? I put on the results page that it was a mass email, but I think I was mistaken. Sorry if I led anyone astray! Edited January 17, 2014 by iphi

I put on the results page that it was a mass email, but I think I was mistaken. Sorry if I led anyone astray! Congrats!! I applied for the EdS program there, but didn't hear back yet. But I did get an interview at University of Delaware today (super surprised because it's only 2 days after I submitted my app)!

But I did get an interview at University of Delaware today (super surprised because it's only 2 days after I submitted my app)! Wow, that's AMAZING!!! Congrats! They must really like you! I wouldn't worry too much about the EdS, I think they're on a different schedule. Our app deadline was December 1, and based on the Results Search I honestly didn't think I'd hear back from them for about a month!
iphi Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 OK guys, I got another interview invitation this afternoon, but my happiness is quickly giving way to stress! The interview dates I was invited to are: February 6, February 7, and February 7! All in 3 different states! What do I do?! Why does everyone schedule on the same weekend?
MN111 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 That's great news! Congratulations! Just calm down- everything will turn out great! What I would do and what I have heard other people doing as well is to keep the interviews at your top choices at their dates. Then explain to your school of lesser choice that you already have an interview on that day. Hope this helps!

Then explain to your school of lesser choice that you already have an interview on that day. Hope this helps! Thanks! One of my schools (actually happens to be one of my top choices) requires you to be there on that day because they do group interviews, so that one is a no-brainer. I will reschedule the other interview I was invited to that day. I am more concerned about getting 800 miles in 12 hours between interviews for Feb 6 & 7. It seems silly to reschedule two interviews for the sake of one. But I am going to be a ball of stress trying to make it, especially on off-peak hours when the school is 1 hour+ from the nearest airport.
