I'm trying to emotionally prepare myself to answer this question for the next 5-10 years of my life haha

One of my friends is currently enrolled at the school psychology program at Hofstra and she says when people ask what she's doing right now she simply answers "I'm in grad school" :P

I just got offered an invite for Hofstra's program today :)

Question regarding APA accreditation:

I've been accepted to three EdS programs, and the one offering the most funding is NOT APA accredited for the PhD program.

My question: would a School Psych doctoral program that is APA accredited accept me if I attend a school that's not APA accredited for the EdS?

Yeah I don't think that matters since EdS programs cannot be APA accredited.

True...but wouldn't a PhD program that's APA accredited want my EdS to be from an accredited program?

Is it at least NASP accredited? And why an EdS before a PhD, may I ask?

This accreditation thing is bugging me, too. I am expecting offers from two programs that don't seem to be APA or NASP accredited. In both cases the school's EdS level is accredited, and the PhD level is not. One told me they are a new program and will be up for accreditation in 2015, the other didn't mention it at all. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

To IPHI: I have every intention of completing the EdS; I want to work in schools, I want to return to the workforce quickly, etc. I only applied to NASP approved programs -- absolutely necessary, as I understand it, to be competitive for jobs nationally.

I think down the road I may want to work independently of schools, so a PhD may be necessary. My thought is that one should get the EdS at a program which is APA accredited at the doctoral level, to be safe...but perhaps there is no hard and fast rule on this.

BTW the two schools that are APA accredited said the transition from EdS to PhD (after year one) is common among students and not terribly difficult. They recommended transitioning after year one, but said it is possible to pursue both degrees independently.

I absolutely would get clarification on which programs are NASP. Link of programs here:

Hey guys--

I have a question that I've been wondering about. Are there any major downsides to attending a school that is not NASP-accredited? I think the reason for this is the internship requirements of the program (it doesn't require that students do their internship in a school setting). I was just wondering because I might want to go the practitioner route instead of academia in the future, and I didn't know if not attending a NASP-accredited school would be a huge impact. I should say that the program IS APA accredited.

hey again rosy,

I have a friend who just graduated from Niagara's school psych program,  although they follow NASP ethos and might even be working toward accreditation they do not yet hold such a title.  That being said, when we spoke about this matter in her opinion it was not as big of a deal as people make it out to be (personal bias idk?)  What I do know is that she had good grades and was able to find an internship paid placement quite easily. hope that helps :)

PS: How did things go at Syracuse, I was wondering about their program.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I know many of the students at the program I applied to end up finding jobs as school psychologists easily, I just didn't know if there were any other implications.

The interview day at Syracuse was really great! Of course, they had like 2-3 feet of snow so the weather wasn't so amazing... but the faculty were all incredibly nice and approachable. They also kept us with surrounded by grad students who worked with faculty we had expressed interest in, so there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions. All of the grad students seemed very happy in the program and supportive of each other. The interview process was pretty rough though: 30 minute individual interviews with each faculty member along with a grad committee interview and writing task.

I will note that the program holds a behavioral school of thought and highly intervention-focused, which might not be appealing to some people. But all in all I thought it seemed like a great program! What's especially nice is that they won't accept someone unless they have funding for them...so you're guaranteed funding for all of your time there.

I know that some school districts prefer that school psychologists come from a NASP accredited program, but you can still become NCSP (National Certified School Psych) even if you come from a non-NASP program. Also, if you're going to an APA accredited program, I wouldn't worry -- I think school districts would understand that you are more than capable :)

Would anyone who's been invited to interivew at St. Johns or Columbia TC be willing to share their interview dates?  I have not heard back from either of these schools and I have this nagging feeling that their interview dates are going to fall on days that I have conflicts.

I saw that people have been invited to interview at St. Johns on the 28th but has anyone else been offered to invite on any other day??

Also, has anyone had a specialist-level interview yet? If so, what questions did they ask? I'm just curious since most of the interview questions I've come across are more related to doctoral-level programs.

Yep I've had 2 so far! I think I posted on page 7ish of this thread with some of the questions they asked, but it's somewhat the same as PhD questions except that there's no questions about research. They asked about strengths, weaknesses, how you handle stress/conflict/working with others (with specific examples).. and I did get one scenario question about what I would do in a certain situation as a school psychologist. But the main questions are of course "Why school psych?" and why their program is a good fit for you and vice versa. Good luck!!

I was also asked (for a PhD program, but sure it applies to EdS as well) "What is the most important issue in SP right now?"

Hi all :)

Congrats to all of you who got accepted. My journey to grad school hasn't begun yet. I will be applying in the fall. I'm interested in School psych programs at Ohio State and University of Minnesota. I would love to connect with anyone who has been accepted or interviewed for their program.

May I ask what your answer was?

I'm interviewing at OSU in March, I'll let you know how it goes!

Nope! You have to come up with your own! :D I did relate it to my research topic of interest, naturally.

I wasn't going to use your answer, I am just curious what other peoples views are of what the most important topics of discussion are right now for SP. No worries if you don't want to share your answer thought.

Also, I noticed that you got into Denver, Was that the EdS? I was also admitted and it says with funding, but we don't know sure how much yet. Does anyone know what type of funding they typically give the EdS students?

Also, when I started this process out, I was interested in EdS and PhD for different reasons. After being accepted to a PhD and getting a sense of the work, I believe I would like to pursue the PhD because I like the various careers I would be able to pursue versus working strictly with schools with the EdS.

So, I am interested if anyone knows a whole lot about the PhD degree program that University of Denver has that is specific for EdS professionals. It only takes two years to complete and since you have already completed the EdS with an internship, you do not have to complete another one. As long as your dissertation is done, you are out in 2 years.  Does anyone know about this program?

I was not able to make it to the on campus interview due to weather/plane cancelations but was still accepted after the Skype interview. Nevertheless, I am taking a trip up there in a few weeks to check out the program and attend a class, as well as talk to faculty and grad students in an attempt to replicate what I would have missed on interview day.

Sorry for the novel!

Sorry to be rude about the answer - basically I posted some things on this forum and went to a group interview and someone had used some of the things I posted, leaving me in kind of a pickle. I'm more careful now!

My acceptance to Denver is for PhD, but I just found out that their PhD program is not accredited (their EdS is). So while I am interested, I am also wary! Their website says that they are "in the process" of accreditation, but I am not sure what that means - i.e. when that will happen.

Who also applied to University of Central Florida that posted on the results search?! I'm deciding whether to go to this interview because it's only 15 mins with no opportunity to meet current grad students/tour and I'm coming from Boston with very expensive flights.. They don't seem to offer a skype or phone interview either. Ugh.

Are you serious? How can they justify that? Ridiculous.
