1Q84 Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 I did not know this. And I have just discovered this... and now I'm obsessed. My whole place is filling up with tiny (and huge) Amazon boxes. Ack! (Hope this is allowed, if not feel free to remove the link part) Not to be spammy, but if you're going to sign up, might as well help a broke guy out and do it from my referral link? http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info?ie=UTF8&refcust=K6IVMAAWPD46II6SWJ4FGG2MU4&ref_type=generic
TakeruK Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 I love this! It's only free for 6 months but it's totally worth the $40/year afterwards ($80/year for non-students). Also, once you pay for Amazon Prime (at the student rate) you also get all of the video benefits etc too!! And Amazon's customer service is top-notch! Online shopping in the US is way way better than in Canada
PsychGirl1 Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 ^ Only problem is that I think you can only get Amazon Prime at the student rate for 4 years. I'll be a student for wayyyy longer than that :-D. Other than that, it's a fantastic deal!!
TakeruK Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Oh I'm still on my first year of Amazon Prime at the student rate and haven't seen anything about being limited to 4 years yet! I'd still pay $80/year for Prime though
1Q84 Posted November 23, 2013 Author Posted November 23, 2013 Yeah, isn't it half-price off after the first year, no exceptions? Agreed, still a sweet deal! There has only been one instance in which I found an item from Amazon cheaper on another site.
PsychGirl1 Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 "After you graduate or at the end of your fourth year of Amazon Student $39 Prime benefits, whichever comes first, your subscription will automatically upgrade on its anniversary date into a full paid subscription for Amazon Prime at $79 a year." http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201133670 I just renewed mine and the email said the same thing- 4 years only at the discounted price. TakeruK Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Ah okay, that's good to know! Thanks, PsychGiril1!
dazedandbemused Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 If this helps anyone, it is possible to extend your student membership. I was about to get moved to a regular prime membership ($80) earlier this year, but I just had to send them a PDF of my PhD acceptance letter and the student rate was extended for another three years! I'm a crazy Amazon over-spender, so this was great news for me. 1Q84 1
juilletmercredi Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Let me tell you, I had Amazon Prime before they started the Amazon Student program and the $80 a year is totally worth it. Even if we're just talking about regular shipping, if you buy more than 10-15 items on Amazon.com per year then you've made up for the cost of shipping, and I get pretty much everything that's not food or cosmetics from Amazon. But when you factor in the fact that it's 2-day shipping AND you get $4 per item one-day shipping for those things you need like tomorrow...it's so totally worth it. I will gladly fork over my money to Amazon every year, lol. 1Q84 and TakeruK 2
