Beardedman
I have one last meeting with my advisor before the holiday break and I'm thinking of getting him a Christmas card and bottle of wine as a thank you for everything he's done for me. Would that be inappropriate? I'm still in the early stages of my degree, but my advisor has already gone out of his way to help me a number of times. Do you know for sure that he celebrates Christmas? Perhaps a holiday card would be better if you're unsure. And only wine if you're sure he drinks wine... Maleficent999
I did something similar for my thesis advisor in undergrad. He seemed to appreciate it and didn't think it was weird.
Eigen
I don't think it would be inappropriate. But then I got beer and cake for my advisors birthday for the group. When you're in grad school, you start having more peer like relationships with your advisor. Holiday presents are a fine part of that. If you're really unsure, ask some of his/her other advisees. Beardedman
Thanks for the advice! I think I'll go with a more generic happy holidays card though, rather than something Christmas-specific.
