junicorn Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Hi guys, Yale MFA deadline is 12 midnight EST on January 1, 2014. I hadn't thought twice about the deadline because I thought without a doubt that this meant 11:59pm ON January 1, not 11:59pm on Dec 31. All of a sudden I'm confused and having a panic attack because one of my recommenders still has not submitted her letter yet. Is the deadline TODAY OR TOMORROW? Thanks!
kafralal Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Also, from what I have read elsewhere, it isn't the end of the game if your submitters are late. There seems to be wiggle room for them.
kafralal Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 It would have been helpful to phrase it 11:59 Jan 1st. Presumably people are back in the office on Jan 2nd, so I don't see any advantage to closing it down on the 1st. It is amazing how quickly doubt seeps in when instructions are ambiguous!
junicorn Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 PHEW! super relieved to hear that. One of my recommenders has been so MIA it's making me nervous... Will have to remind her once more.. Thanks again, kfralal!
kafralal Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Having said "tomorrow" so confidently I'm now feeling pretty uncomfortable. Here is a discussion about it elsewhere from another year. Seems their deadline is the same every year. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/common-application/839437-if-deadline-jan-1-do-i-have-until-dec-31st-11-59pm-jan-1st-11-59pm.html
kafralal Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the deadline is one minute after Dec 31 at 11:59. Get your app in today!!
junicorn Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 Ugh, why they gotta be so unclear! I'm submitting my application today, but my recommender probably won't submit her part until tomorrow (if not later.......) Thanks!
bathtub Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 i understood it as one minute after Dec 31 at 11:59, so I made sure to get it in during 2013. However it says elsewhere on the site: 3. References from three persons practicing or teaching in the field in which application is made, attesting to the applicant’s ability and competence in that field. NOTE: Because the admissions committee reviews applications shortly after the deadline, time limitations may preclude reading any supporting documents uploaded after the first week of January. Please impress this fact on the people who will be writing on your behalf. In my case I have one recommendation coming in Friday. I believe it should be ok, Friday is still technically the first week in January. It's probably not ideal but ok. good luck!
junicorn Posted January 1, 2014 Author Posted January 1, 2014 Yeah, I was concerned because Yale particularly made a point of wanting everything in by the deadline. Understandable, since they want to get in touch with those they want to interview by February. I've calmed down a bit. Not terrible worried anymore... Thanks, bathtub!

When you mean one recommendation coming in Friday, do you mean a physical copy? Or will the person submit online?
bathtub Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 When you mean one recommendation coming in Friday, do you mean a physical copy? Or will the person submit online? the person will be submitting online! the other two are in already...

Thanks, bathtub! haha yes, im way more calm after having gotten through that first app and knowing all is squared away. the rest of the apps should be fairly easy now! (hope that last recommender comes trhough Friday though)
junicorn Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 My recommender submitted her letter one hour before the deadline. PHEW! Best of luck to everyone!
