MFA Painting Columbia IMAGE RESOLUTION QUESTION!!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone ! I hope all is well with the New Year's. This is rather urgent and a bit stupid but what is the protocol for

Resolution size of the image for Slideroom.com for paintings? I am also preparing a portfolio for other applications and the consensus is 5MB (Slideroom and poking around MFA website) max per image.  I am at 72DPI and want the images to not have to be stretched our or too big when the Admissions look at them -- anyone have any experience?

1718 × 1860 pixels okay? too small?

2650 × 3195 pixels too big?

Thanks so much and good  luck everyone!!

I do not have experience on the viewing side of things, but did apply to Columbia. I just saved each image as close to 5mb as possible at 72 dpi. The pixel sizes vary, but mine all ended up in the 1000-1600/side range. I am sure they'll view each image full size, and won't stretch them.

I hope that helps, and good luck!

Really don't worry about stretching. Even the smaller of the dimensions you've listed are huge for a computer screen. Even if they were to use a massive 27" or 30" monitor to view, 1700 pixels for the short side is bigger than the height of the monitor. At that point going bigger just allows them to zoom in more to see texture or detail etc.

Hi everyone thanks so much for the responses! So the images are viewed on a mac monitor instead of the computer being hooked up to a projector and viewed on a larger screen? I actually can't believe I've never asked an admissions person about this in general haha.  I got this info from someone regarding projectors in general: highest resolution for a projector is 1900x1080 72dpi and some could be as low as 800x600 72dpi. So, to be safe I guess make sure it looks really good at 5MB 72dpi and not larger than 1900x1080 ?

Hi everyone,

I just made a huge boo boo on my application and accidentally shrunk my photos to 80kb in Photoshop and they were submitted in Slideroom that way. Yikes! I was using a new version of Photoshop and I wasn't used to it and it was telling me that the images were larger than what they were. But now I can't go back in to edit. Does anyone know if the graduate admissions office has a way to let you re-submit new images and go back in and fiz this??? I don't want  to change any part of muy application but just make sure it's readable.

following up on the Slideroom image dimensions, Slideroom's own FAQ section explains that " Our processors will resize anything larger than 1280 x 1280 x 72 ppi to fit within those limitations."

(from the answer to the question "What size should my media files be?", 6th question in the Media section of the FAQ)

So, it seems that its actually not at all helpful to make your images any larger than those dimensions.

How do I edit a submitted application? #

If you wish to edit a completed submission, please contact the institution directly (you can reach them by using their contact information on your dashboard or on their main website) and request they unsubmit your portfolio. Once they grant this request, you will be able to make edits and resubmit for free.

80 kb is really small, sizing up will result in lots of pixelation, i would definitely call the office and ask to resubmit.
