hopefulpessimiste Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Got into NYU. Holy fuck... JEEZ LOUISE! Congrats, that's soo fantastic! Seriously, how the heck are you so awesome at this whole getting-into-grad-school thing?
zblaesi Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 You get into everything, what are you so surprised about? I really want to read his writing sample so I can see what the committees are seeing. Circle of Fourths 1
PhiPhiPhi Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I have fantasies about Sharon Street calling me. Sharon: "Hey, Zach." Zach: "Sharon?... what the fuck?..." I'm surprised you're applying to the same program that you did undergrad at. That's generally frowned down upon. Did someone at NYU encourage you to apply at home?

zblaesi Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I'm surprised you're applying to the same program that you did undergrad at. That's generally frowned down upon. Did someone at NYU encourage you to apply at home? Stephen Schiffer sort of encouraged me. He said an NYU undergraduate was once admitted because he (Schiffer) "knew he did good work." I also know another grad student who started out as an NYU undergrad. Plus, I'm a transfer student, so I've only been there 2 years. So... why not?

Well good luck with that.
PhD applicant Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I really want to read his writing sample so I can see what the committees are seeing. Yeah, I'm curious what makes every top school accept the same person... maybe they pimped themselves... I'm really bad at that.
ungerdrag Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Thanks, y'all. Hope everybody gets in somewhere they love! AcademicX 1

I had a Protestant Priest bless my writing sample. Clearly, I should have gone with a Catholic. PhD applicant and isostheneia 2
ungerdrag Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 In case people want to see, here's my writing sample. I spent a pretty long time polishing it. (Except the last two paragraphs of the intro, which were just added last week.) hopefulpessimiste Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 So ungerdrag...any idea where you're going to end up? It must be hard to decide when you have so many good options! I mean that very sincerely (and I wish I had a similar problem). I'm so sorry if that's too invasive--I'm just curious. wandajune 1

PhiPhiPhi Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Guys, if you want to know what not to do, check my signature links. From a quick glance, what you submitted doesn't look bad. Sometimes you just have shit luck, regardless of possible qualifications. The thing I'd worry most about is your letters. Are you sure that your letter writers wrote you great letters? Did they reach out to people to help you along with applications? These types of connections are the most important part of an application (in my opinion), and will continue to be important throughout your career.
Establishment Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) From a quick glance, what you submitted doesn't look bad. Sometimes you just have shit luck, regardless of possible qualifications. Seriously. I know you won't appreciate this since you're future is hanging on the line here, but from the outside it's incredibly hilarious how fickle/random admissions is. (Not to poopoo on those who got in. You can only get admitted if you're super duper qualified in the first place. It's just that there's so many super duper qualified persons that it does become just a matter of chance at the end.) Edited March 5, 2014 by Establishment PhiPhiPhi 1
