cyprusprior Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I just heard back from NC State (Stats) and University of Washington (Biostats), and I hope it's not immodest to share the news. Thank you to everyone on this forum who answered my questions when I was trying to figure out where to apply. I really appreciate everyone's encouragement and help with the process. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has heard from other schools.
Funkoverload Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 congrats! i did not receive any result from u of washington yet. i saw some admission postings in the section 'results search' so i expect my result might come in a couple of days or it is wait listed. i would like you to decline your ncsu offer for others soon.

Does anyone know when the UW Stats (not Biostat) results will come out? Probably next week right? Last year the earliest results came out Jan 19th.

Ah yes, seems like Minnesota reviews based on first come first serve. Also Harvard sent out first acceptance letters late January last year. So Harvard's coming up soon too..
Lelouch Lamperouge Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Hi cyprusprior, I have also been admitted by UW's Biostatistics PhD program. I am waiting for results from other programs now.
Funkoverload Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 Hi cyprusprior, I have also been admitted by UW's Biostatistics PhD program. I am waiting for results from other programs now. how did you get the result? by email? do you think i can check my application status online too?
Lelouch Lamperouge Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 how did you get the result? by email? do you think i can check my application status online too? I got the email on Friday afternoon. I guess the application status online has not been updated by so far. Wish you good luck!
Funkoverload Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I got the email on Friday afternoon. I guess the application status online has not been updated by so far. Wish you good luck! no result means 'not admitted at the first round, wait listed' or 'will receive a rejection in a couple of days since there were too many rejections to send in a day'. feel very uncomfortable.
Lelouch Lamperouge Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 no result means 'not admitted at the first round, wait listed' or 'will receive a rejection in a couple of days since there were too many rejections to send in a day'. feel very uncomfortable. Sorry that I have no idea about this. My guess is: they haven't sent out all the admission offers at this early stage. You can see several peoples have already posted their rejections. At least it is not bad to know that you are not rejected now.
Lelouch Lamperouge Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I also haven't received a result from UW biostatistics. Last year it looks like they sent out a ton of acceptances and rejections (20+) within a couple days and these were posted in the results section pretty promptly. This year only 9 acceptances and rejections have been posted from the first day. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they are going to send out some more acceptances and rejections on Monday. Maybe they were interrupted by the weekend. Were the acceptances personalized at all? Somebody mentioned that they were last year. If this is the case, maybe they've split up responsibility for writing the emails and some professors are faster than others. Or maybe I'm just being very optimistic. Hi, I applied to UW's Statistics PhD program last year and got rejected. I did not apply for their Biostatistics PhD program last year. I know nobody in neither their Stats program nor Biostats program, so I didn't write emails to any professors. This is just my case.

Or maybe I'm just being very optimistic. you seem to be an international applicant. it must be very competitive. 10-20 admissions would be made out of 300 applicants. I was admitted to UW biostat on Friday, and my acceptance email (but not the attached official letter) was personalized.

adagietto Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I just got a rejection from Washington as well (sent an hour or so ago); really bummed. Does anyone happen to know when the Harvard, Hopkins, and UNC timelines are, or what the size of admitted classes are? Also, I know that Harvard and Hopkins interview applicants...does anyone have information on how that goes (i.e., what percent of candidates extended interviews are then extended offers)?
Funkoverload Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 not a good sign since i got rejected at the first stage. my application might be totally wrong or so. one reference might be super bad or so. so worried.
zoothoot Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Has anyone else heard from NC State? There is a slew of UW Biostat results on the results viewer. I only see one for NC State.
persistent_homology Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Just heard from OSU stats phd, no word on funding in email. Hopefully that's to follow!
cyprusprior Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 Another email just came in from UNC Biostats, for those interested. Strangely, while the letter does seem to be congratulatory, it never explicitly says "you have been admitted". But they did provide an invitation to the open house day in February.
Lelouch Lamperouge Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 (edited) I have got Johns Hopkins and UPenn's invitations to their visit days. JHU: the end of January Penn: Feb.7th. Both are Biostatistics PhD programs. Edited January 14, 2014 by Lelouch Lamperouge
Funkoverload Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 some applicants got invited for the open house from jhu and it seems to be related to interviews for the program. the deadline for jhu biostatistics is jan. 15. i have no idea how jhu can process this important procedure earlier than the application deadline.
coffeehouse Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 CMU Statistics' email confirmation when you apply says: "All applicants will receive notification of their status by email no later than January 30. We realize that waiting is very difficult. However, we request that you do not call or email our offices to inquire about the status of your application." Does this mean everyone will receive admission/rejection by the end of this month? How come on the results page I see some results in Feb and March last year and the year previous? EVERYONE receiving result by end of this month seems insanely unlikely...
