lidon Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I haven't lived in Pittsburgh personally, but I visited there spring of last year. I was very pleasantly surprised by the city. It is far from the industrial wasteland I expected. I really admire the pride the local people take in the improvements in their surroundings. I was able to rent a bike and explore along one of the three rivers (I think it was the Monongahela?). I also am a big outdoors enthusiast, and while it's not necessarily my ideal place to live, I think it compares favorably with most other similar-sized cities. Actually, while there may be more outdoorsy people in places like Madison Wisconsin, I think Pittsburgh has the advantage of being close to the awesome mountains and wilderness areas of West Virginia. Bottom line, I would not rule it out as "unlivable" until you can visit in person. Agreed. Though I've only visited Pittsburgh a few times, I do like the city. Out of those Rust Belt cities in the Midwest and Northeast that were hit by manufacturing decline some decades ago, Pittsburgh (in my opinion) has done a remarkably good job cleaning itself up and shifting to a tech/service based economy.
alienne Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Accepted and funded: Carnegie Mellon, UW-Madison (biostat option), and Colorado State Kind of accepted (funding not yet guaranteed, they say they are trying to get funding for me): Cornell Rejected: University of Washington No word yet from my other schools.. the only one left in my list where I really want to get in is Berkeley! Also... probstats, can you say more about Pittsburgh? I am obviously very excited about the offer from CMU but a little leery about the city. In particular, I am a very outdoorsy person and like smaller towns/cities... do you think I'd be miserable or find a way to get outside and away from the city occaisionally? Did the letter from Cornell say admission or waitlist?

I definitely plan to visit, they haven't told me when the visit day is yet though... Did the letter from Cornell say admission or waitlist? It was not a formal offer. It was an email from a professor saying they strongly recommend my admission, but are still working to get funding to offer me actual admission. They still want to give me $500 to visit though, despite me not knowing for sure that I'm in, which is odd... but yeah.

muzili Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Rejected at Cornell. So, so far I'm rejected From Duke and Cornell, but accepted to Carnegie Mellon. Honestly, I've been pretty worry free after finally getting in to CMU though. I would be very happy attending there! also rejected at Cornell no news from CMU, so I guess it's a rejection got a interview from Duke but no decision....just waiting, waiting

Good luck Mine said I have been placed in a short list for their next round of offers and they will make these as funding becomes available.

I come from a very suburban background and I was worried about Pittsburgh's reputation for crime. Looking at the numbers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate it actually seems like it doesn't rank that highly for crime compared to other US cities, so perhaps that reputation is unfounded. I am glad other people seem to like it though. I am international and so can't really afford to visit before I decide, and this makes me somewhat anxious about the process.

I thought UNC released their biostatistics results about a month ago. At least that's when the invites went out to their recruitment weekend...

mittensmitten895 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Accepted at Harvard biostat! The decision will come down to Michigan vs. Harvard (both biostatistics). Either way, it's a win for the non-traditional PhD route!
