muzili Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Get admitted into UCLA statistics! I have interest in Bayesian statistics and biostatistics. It seems that OSU is better in Bayesian methods, but UCLA has excellent research group in bioinformatics. How should I choose between them? Can you give me some advice?
adagietto Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 You won't curse Father Winter for five months out of the year when it's below freezing. That's a plus.
coffeehouse Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Anyone hear from JHU Stats? Also what is Chicago up to....
toyoujhj Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Anyone hear from JHU Stats? Also what is Chicago up to.... Do you mean Hopkins Biostats??
ginagirl Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 (edited) Do you mean Hopkins Biostats?? I emailed Hopkins Biostats last Friday inquiring about my status and I was told that they would have "more information early next week" (this week). They were closed on Monday, so I thought I would hear something Tuesday or yesterday but I haven't. Have you contacted the department at all? I can't believe its been nearly 5 weeks since the visit weekend. Edited March 6, 2014 by ginagirl

I can't believe they aren't still releasing their results... but I do see one acceptance in the results post. Are they having multiple rounds or something?

I wonder if that is a current Masters student who got internally accepted. Just a thought, being that I haven't seen anything else. I wasn't given the impression that there would be rounds of acceptances or rejections- the whole process was made to sound like it would be pretty quick. I'm in a tight spot though because they're my top choice right now, and I would like to know if they're going to just reject me. I am planning on going to UMN's accepted students weekend (for Masters), which is this weekend and would obviously not go if Hopkins accepted me. I still need to buy a plane ticket >.< Edited March 6, 2014 by ginagirl

Maybe they're doing the 'informal wait list' sort of deal that they mentioned at the visit day.

I thought that too, but I thought maybe I would have been told that when I asked about my status. Instead I was told to "hang tight". I know this is sort of not worth discussing at so much length, I guess I'm just frustrated and getting discouraged. I know it's a hard process for them and I should be more understanding if it takes them time to get through everyone.

I don't know how much longer I should wait to hear from them.

aridneptune Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 ginagirl and toyoujhj: for what it's worth, I know of at least two people who are heavily leaning toward declining their Hopkins offers. So hang in there.

coffeehouse Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Just got waitlist for Chicago PhD in Statistics.

It seems that OSU is better in Bayesian methods, but UCLA has excellent research group in bioinformatics. How should I choose between them? Can you give me some advice? Is that Ohio State or Oregon State? If it's Ohio State, I've visited their department and I think it's pretty solid in bayes and computing. Unlike a lot of other departments, I think they also offer promising students university fellowships so you might not have to TA/RA the first year. Also the Columbus area has a fairly low cost of living.
agent229 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Waitlisted for Chicago too, but withdrew my app. Hope someone who really wants it gets a spot!

Stat Assistant Professor Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 L.A. is very expensive and sprawling (so most people need a car to get pretty much anywhere). The weather would be a lot nicer though. Ohio (and midwest in general) has low cost of living, so if you are aiming to save money and don't mind cold weather, OSU could be a good choice.
CauchyProcess Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Got an acceptance from UC Irvine, will need to wait a bit longer for info on possible funding. Still waiting on Columbia and UCLA, but odds are if I was going to get accepted there, I would've been accepted to one of my other 'reach' schools as well, so pretty much just waiting for the rejection letter. I guess my main decision now is whether I want to stay in California or move to New York.
Funkoverload Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 (edited) Received an admission for Biostatistics PhD from FSU without financial support. This is the only offer that I have received so far but I am not sure if I will accept it. I have received a lot of rejections so I am not sure if I can get one offer with financial support in the future. Worried. Please advise me if you have any information about FSU Biostatistics PhD. Ask the department if there is there is a chance you can get financial support in the future. If a school could guarantee me support after the first year, I *might* be willing to go (this would probably depend on your financial situation). But if they cannot guarantee that, then I would probably not go.
ezballer1126 Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Does anyone know anything about the Florida biostats department? I have heard good things from a few professors, but it does not seem to be well-known, and it does not appear on any biostat rankings. From the list of current PhD students on their website, it appears 15/16 are international. Not to sound ignorant, but this is slightly concerning to me as a domestic American applicant. Any information on the department would be helpful
wine in coffee cups Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Does anyone know anything about the Florida biostats department? I have heard good things from a few professors, but it does not seem to be well-known, and it does not appear on any biostat rankings. From the list of current PhD students on their website, it appears 15/16 are international. Not to sound ignorant, but this is slightly concerning to me as a domestic American applicant. Any information on the department would be helpful Just glancing at a few faculty CVs, it doesn't appear to have existed as its own department until 2010 (was under epidemiology before). This thread from last year might be helpful: It's probably the case that the department is majority international, but it can be really hard to tell going off of names/photos. For example, 4 out of 11 people in my cohort are US/Canadian citizens and native English speakers who happen to be of Chinese or Indian descent. I would only worry about overrepresentation of international students for a couple of reasons: (1) if strong social cliques form on national lines (UF biostat might be too small for this to be an issue) and (2) if international students almost all intend to return to their home countries after graduation (limited usefulness of future alumni network and limited signaling information on reputation of alumni when you go on the market in the USA). These are issues in some departments and not in others, but current students could tell you.
