Admitted with no funding to Stanford's MS&E master's degree program that previously rejected my PhD application. Will be declining, as I have fully funded PhD offers from elsewhere.

Anyone know what's going on with UC Davis?  Will they send out more offers?

I know Davis stat  has sent out 24 offers so far, they plan to admit 14(I got it from a current student). I think they won't send more offers. I applied biostat group and I am still waiting. I am not sure if they reviewd the applications together with the stat department.

Thanks for the update.  I guess my chances of getting into any programs now is pretty small :(

I was informed that OSU has made decisions about university fellowship. 1700$/month  I guess that's enough for daily expenses?

I think that's definitely enough for most people's daily lives here. But for me, I will expect to spend it all if you need to pay taxes. (I am not sure if fellowship needs to pay taxes.)

yes, the letter said that I need to pay taxes. Maybe 2.5% or more. Do you know what's the average rent in places near OSU?

Come on, of course you need to pay taxes. It's income, isn't it? There is, however, a carve-out for FICA taxes. Full-time students don't have to pay payroll taxes (7.5%, so that's pretty significant).

In the UK PhD students are not taxed on their stipends, so it is a reasonable question for international students to have :)

Wait, is tax rate for fellowship different??? I think the city tax withholding rate is already 2.5%... Anyway, what I am saying is, if you need to pay taxes for fellowship, you should expect the rate to be much more than 2.5% in Columbus.

The rental prices depend on a lot of things. Usually, it ranges from $300 to $700+ for a single room close to campus. If you want to find a one bedroom or studio, be prepared for at least $550 a month; if you want to have roommate(s) to share the rent, usually you need $400 to $600 for a decent to nice place. I'd say Columbus is a nice place to live, and is still less expensive than most major cities, but the winter here is toooo cold for me...

Congrats to your fellowship! Have you decided to come to OSU?

Looks like I was wrong about UCLA not rejecting anyone till April. I see some people posting rejections on the results page. The Decision Status page still indicates mine is undecided. Guess I will just wait.

Just one week until the new U.S. News and World Report rankings! Interested to see how they will look this year.

If your country has some tax treaties with the US federal government, you can be taxed at a reduced rate, or even be exempt from the taxes.

Awesome! Have to look into that.

Excuse me, I wasn't thinking about the international students. You may want to check with your tax authority, the IRS and your school's financial-aid office. It seems like foreign nationals with a tax treaty have to report stipend income but not pay state, federal or FICA taxes on it.

That said, the IRS Publication (pdf) on the issue is pretty vague:

"A student or business apprentice who is a resident of the United Kingdom immediately before visiting the United States and is in the United States for the purpose of full-time education at a recognized educational institution or full-time training is exempt from U.S. income tax on amounts received from abroad for the individual's maintenance, education, or training."

No mention seems to be made of stipends received from U.S.-domiciled insitutions. Based on this, I'd assume (contrary to the Chicago link) that you'll have to pay state and local taxes on your stipend. That said, they'll be pretty low and you'll be exempt from FICA.

Thanks for the info, it's a bit of a minefield.

I'm sure your school's financial aid office will know the answer :-)

Does anyone heard from Chicago? I'm still waiting for the decision.

Who else is in the same boat as me?

I'm still considering and waiting on UCLA and UNC. I am not sure whether I will go to OSU if UCLA gives me an offer.

If you are not too anxious to know it right now, you can wait until you come and check in at the school. Before they pay you the first month's stipend, they will ask you to fill out some online tax report form, and you can find the answer about the treaty there.

I understand.

Actually, I'm also waiting for UCLA and UNC... But for the biostat program... If any of them gives me an offer, I will definitely go there.

Good luck to you!

I still haven't heard from them, there have been a lot of acceptances already so it doesn't look good. But I emailed them last week and they said they were still undecided. Probably undecided between rejected and waitlisted. Stranger things have happened though!

Math or Statistics? I heard back a couple of weeks ago about getting wait list (for pure math). He said it was "quite a short list."

Yeah, they have already accepted so many applicants... (sigh). I also emailed them yesterday and they said they haven't decided yet. I hope that we would be notified soon to not have false hope.
