sanfram Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Hey y'all, After receiving an acceptance letter, I got invited to attend a recruitment event for a PhD program in Writing & Rhetoric. I'm just wondering if anyone has been to an event like this and can share some things so I know what to expect? As I said, I've already been accepted and given a tentative promise of funding, so it's not like an interview type thing I don't think. It's three days long, so i'm excited but like....the hell we gon do for three days? lol Thanks!
Garnet Geek Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Hi, I've had a little bit of experience with this, so speaking generally: you'll get to meet other prospective students, current grad students and professors, maybe sit in on a class, tour the campus and see its facilities (perhaps a library or such). It might be helpful to bring some questions (regarding placement rates, teaching requirements, etc). Anyway, these are usually a lot of fun and very informative. Congrats, and enjoy yourself!

Three days is a good amount of time to find out if people secretly hate the program, who gets jobs and where, what it's like to live in X, and whether or not it's an environment that will foster your research. There are lots of different kinds of programs and once all your acceptances are in you'll have some deciding to do. Decisions are easier to make once you have a bit of an inside view of the program. antecedent 1

Often they'll try and put you up with current grad students, and it's a really good way to see if the program is as awesome as you think it is. If you get more than one acceptance I would try to attend every recruitment weekend to compare! That's what they're for.

Second of all - Definitely go, especially if it's paid. This is the program's chance to prove to you why you should go there! It's a really great chance to meet students and faculty and get a good look at where you could be spending the next several years of your life. My visit days were really what helped me decide between programs. You learn things about a program that you wouldn't be able to ascertain over the phone with the DGS or over email with a current student.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to think about programs both intellectually and on a gut-level -- there are some I'm drawn to that my advisors are trying to talk me out of, but I want to trust that gut-level "fit" feeling...
