  1. Don't feel bad about it. You deserve to make as informed a decision as possible. It's a huge life decision, ya know? Be sure. From another perspective, they'd probably feel good to know they're getting an opportunity to show you what they got before your mind is made up. Anyway, 30% is significant. If you're able to go, I say go. Congrats!
  2. Nice getting an interview, but yeah...that waiting is no fun!
  3. Anyone get waitlisted to the Lit program at Duke? I know they've interviewed, invited people for a campus visit, and sent out some rejections over the past couple weeks, but I still have no update on my status.
  4. Just wanna shout out my fellow mixed-race, applyin-to-grad-school-in-the-Humanities Latinos! To be honest, most of y'all seem to have had much more successful undergrad careers than I had. I took some time off and just worked in a restaurant after getting my BA, then got funded to do my MA at huge state school. Next, I taught abroad for a while and now I've applied to six schools and been accepted to one PhD program I'm really excited about. In short, I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Yer stats sound pretty good, and I've got some options having accomplished much less early on in school. Plus, going straight into a grad program isn't the only way to do it.
  5. err i wasn't saying capitalism is postmodernism, but that's an interesting idea. i was saying that this mixed pro-capitalist anti-capitalism seems like a postmodern perspective to me. what's Das Kapital? is that by Tom Clancy? but yes, i do appreciate your thoughts on the job market, preparing for it in diverse ways, and especially the bit about how to use knowledge our field is creating.
  6. sup with all the pro-capitalist anticapitalism in this thread? gdamnit, postmodernism... and as for the job discussion, i would gladly enter a PhD program to take a shot at getting a gig in my academic interest area, if i knew i could fall back on something more realistic and sustainable than what i'm doing right now (adjunct) if need be. i appreciate champagne's comment on going into administration, because i've been thinking about that lately. yeah, it's not really what i want to end up doing, but what i really don't want to end up doing is being an adjunct after getting my PhD, or being 100% jobless. but how can i/we be sure? i guess i've never really researched the job market for more administration-type jobs, though i've applied for a few. in conclusion, fuck capitalism.
  7. Thanks y'all! I assumed it would kinda just be fine and informative, but wanted to see if other people had experienced similar events. Appreciate the feedback!
  8. Hey y'all, After receiving an acceptance letter, I got invited to attend a recruitment event for a PhD program in Writing & Rhetoric. I'm just wondering if anyone has been to an event like this and can share some things so I know what to expect? As I said, I've already been accepted and given a tentative promise of funding, so it's not like an interview type thing I don't think. It's three days long, so i'm excited but like....the hell we gon do for three days? lol Thanks!
  9. I interviewed for an ESL gig at this university in Cambodia, which is apparently opening its doors for the first time in the fall. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this or looked into it? I'm just skeptical that it's a scam of some sort, though there I haven't found concrete evidence yet, just a few red flags. I found the job ad on the Chronicle's site, so that makes me feel a little better. Of course, that's not an absolute safety net, though. The interview was over Skype, and three people asked me questions for about 45 minutes. The questions were no less rigorous than any other institution I've interviewed with--also a good sign. The red flags are this: 1) It's a new institution and in a foreign country (duh). 2) I couldn't see anyone in the Skype interview. We tried to correct the problem, but were never able to fix it. 3) No one I've been talking with has used a .edu email address. I looked up one of the names of the interviewers and found him at a reputable institution, and I sent an email to that address saying some shit about if he wanted my letters of rec, just to see if I'm dealing with identity theft or something. 4) The process has been happening really fast. I applied and heard back within 2 weeks. I interviewed and heard back the same day that they want to talk with me further and that I'm a top priority for them. So...am I crazy? or gullible? Or am I just in shock that someone is actually showing interest in hiring me, haha? Any feedback or advice you have to offer would be great.

  11. Ah, yes. I've been stopping by periodically to see what's up, but meh...just grindin lately. My main preparation for the upcoming application cycle has been to try and get a few publications under my belt. So far, so good, but haven't even started working on applications yet. :-/ And Rose, I don't know exactly what you're working on, but based on your comment I think I'd probably just cite at the end of the paragraph (so long as no other citations are interjected along the way).
  12. Thanks, but care to elaborate on why these are your two cents? That is, have you had some sort of run-in with IGI?
  13. Thanks for the links, though the threads want me to log in, so I can't see them. The editors of the book project I'm involved with are senior faculty members (at an adjacent university) who I met through my thesis director, so it seems/seemed legit. I wonder if it would actually hurt me to have this on my CV, then, while applying to PhD programs?
  14. I recently had a chapter accepted into a book project that is publishing through IGI Global. Just wondering if people have anything to say about the reputation of this publisher? They only publish academic scholarship as far as I understand, but I'm wondering how much it will help to have this publication on my CV as someone within the Writing & Rhetoric field, or more generally as an aspiring scholar? Thanks!

  16. Yeah, your experience sounds pretty strange. I was familiar with a couple of the keynote speakers in 2012, so it seemed legit to me. I didn't submit my paper for publication, though I did agree to be a reader. Overall, it was a good experience and I was just wondering if others had anything to add. Thanks a lot for the feedback!
  17. Thanks, y'all! I think contacting the department secretary sounds like the best first move. I feel weird about bothering the Chair for something like this, unless for some reason I don't get a response from other folks.
  18. So I'm just wondering if anyone has heard of the International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities? It's not put on by one university (I don't think) so much as a coalition of universities. Do you think this will hold much wait on a CV? I'm an MA applying to PhD programs, and I presented last year when it was held in Montreal. Here's a link to the conference website. Thanks!
  19. Hello, all! I'm wondering what the appropriate way is of inquiring about possible adjunct positions at a university or college? Most of the time these positions aren't necessarily "posted" in the same way that full time gigs are posted, but I've also been wondering if it reflects poorly on me to be inquiring via email about adjunct positions instead of more permanent positions (like if it suggests that I don't think I'm qualified). My partner is applying to PhD prep programs around the country, and I will consider moving with her if I can at least gain some more teaching experience by adjuncting a writing course or two in the geographical area where she'll be moving--just to be clear about my situation. Any info/insight you have to offer is much appreciated!
  20. How recent does a book need to be in order to make it reviewable for an academic journal? Obviously, the newer the better, but I've noticed some journals reviewing books that were published 3 or 4 years prior.
  21. Me too. very little seems to be known about the mtvU process/timeline from here on out. :-/ I sent an email a few days ago to ask about it, but haven't heard back yet. double :-/ People in the National Scholarship Office at my university seem to think there might not be rounds for this program and that we'll just hear back straight up as to whether or not we've won. Makes sense I guess, as I don't think the countries we're applying will have to tell someone else "no" just because they're telling us "yes." Or, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Yay waiting!
  22. I did! Haven't heard anything yet. They said it'd probably be in April sometime, though.
  23. Awesome! It's such a new program that the National Scholarship Office at my school seems to be in the dark about exactly when we'll hear back, how many applicants there usually are for this one, etc. I emailed Fulbright and they said we should hear back sometime in April if we have made it to the next round. I don't know when the final final decisions are made though. I need to find out before the end of the semester in early May :-/ Where'd you apply to go? I'm trying to go to Mexico.
  24. Anyone else out there apply specifically to the Fulbright-mtvU program? It's a newer program, and our deadline wasn't until March 1st, so I have no clue what the process/timeframe looks like from here on out.
  25. I cannot promise you sanity (we are talking about grad school, ya know ), but I am doing both of these things right now. Actually, I did that last year. This year I'm teaching my own course, doing 10 hours of RA work a week, plus my own coursework/research, blah blah blah. Are you sure they don't cap your RA hours at a particular number? Kind of absurd if not. Not gonna lie, it's really tough, but overall I'm happy with what I'm doing. If you plan on doing doing research professionally, then the RAship is pretty key.
