HistThrift Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I'm not applying to any PH programs per se, but I will be continuing to work in the PH field with my doctoral studies to some extent or another. I am currently wrapping up my MA in Public History.
thedig13 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Not officially applying for Public History, but, if I end up pursuing my PhD at my undergrad institution, might end up working closely with the Public History program. I've already worked with the Public History program as an undergrad, and my proposed advisor is the director of Public History.

I applied to University of South Carolina, Cooperstown Graduate Program (I want to work in museums), Loyola, Middle Tennessee, and Florida State. Congrats on starting your program!

I spoke with the professor in charge of the program and I liked that there is a lot of freedom and interdisciplinarity. There are people interested in media/visual culture, history, anthropology/ethnology, art history, etc. and are free to work on projects or exhibitions within their individual areas of interest. They encourage relationships with profs from other departments which is nice. Are the other programs like that? I didn't look into a lot of them because this one is semi-local to me & convenient. I'm curious about what you all like about your programs. All the other programs I've applied to have close ties with museums or offer some kind of museum-related courses, since that is important to me.

The head of the Public History program is super-awesome. I've worked with her before, and I can vouch for her fantastic quality..

My program is fantastic -- supportive of interdisciplinarity, new technologies, community outreach, etc. I think it also creates a stronger-than-average attachment to issues of social justice. There's still some push back about the academic legitimacy/rigor of public history, but I think this sentiment is fading very quickly.

Raikku13 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 I applied to UNC-Charlotte, Cooperstown Graduate Program, Brown's Public Humanities, WUSTL, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and University of New Orleans. I was accepted to UNCC, CGP, and IUPUI, rejected from Brown and WUSTL, and still haven't heard back from UNO. Cooperstown was my dream school; I had been in contact with the Director since early last year and knew a number of graduates who encouraged me to apply. I did the whole interview weekend things just a couple weeks ago. The only thing is funding. Tuition costs have gone up 25% in one year, leaving students to take out the max in loans for one school year. Although they have a great alumni network, I don't know if it's worth crippling debt. One doesn't work in museums to get rich, you know.
vityaz Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Ouch, that sucks. I'd be very wary about taking any debt to go for a Public History program. You're right, people don't get into this field to get rich and it's probably not going to be worth it. catsandscarves 1
