Fulbright 2015-2016

Hello everyone!

I have been following this forum for a long time and this is my first time posting. I am applying to do a public health research project in Japan. Is there anyone else who is applying to Japan as well? I would love to hear about your project!

Also, does anyone else have to get IRB approval before doing their research? I am weary about starting the IRB process if there is no gurantee that I will be accepted.

i applied for research and was recommended. currently playing the waiting game like everyone else. this whole process is literally nail-biting.

Yes it is! But at least at this point, the wait for us is a maximum of 7 weeks (hopefully we will have the decision much sooner) - we are almost there!! So far, there are 3 of us Moldova research applicants in this thread. Wishing you all the best!!

Despite my attempts to remain level-headed, I'm imagining I'll have a Michael Scott contingency plan conjured up sometime soon:

I personally have two bottles of scotch under my bed... so maybe I'll make my own happy/sad box soon as well. TMI?

Anyway, for everyone anxious that it's been TWO WHOLE DAYS with no updates... As someone who went through this process last year I can assure you that it doesn't really mean anything in either direction. My friends who received ETA and research Fulbrights last year heard as late as the end of April, but none earlier than the third week of March or so. We have to keep in mind that these applications and approvals have to go through A LOT of hands before the final offers can be made. Everyone who has sat on a committee or honestly been in a regular ol' office meeting knows how much chatter goes on before any action is actually taken, haha.

So, while the website might reflect Fulbright's IDEAL timeline it doesn't necessarily mean that the dates are very concrete. Honestly, I will be really surprised (pleasantly so!) if anyone on this forum hears by the end of this week. Things will likely begin to trickle in next week, with a sharp increase in notifications in the third and fourth weeks of March.

Good luck to everyone! Let's all try to relax (as much as we can, at least).

Now that things are really almost getting underway, I may have spent way too much time last night reading last year's thread. So exciting to read about the applications that got funded! And even through the heartache of those that weren't, there was so much camaraderie along with the exchange of words of wisdom. I look forward to cheering folks on -- best of luck & good spirits to all as announcements start to come out later this month! :-)

Medievalist,

Could you please,if you may, elaborate more on the relationship between admission and selection? I was under the impression that admission to a program conferred no advantage.

It might have no effect at all, but notifying the Fulbright Commission that I'd been accepted to the university I selected in my Fulbright application certainly can't hurt my chances.

While I'm playing the waiting game with everyone else, it's nice to think that someone (or several someone's) read our applications and believed in what we had to say, and why we want this, and recommended us for a grant. Best of luck to everyone!

Scotch as a contingency plan... Excellent.  And If I get funded, I'll go directly to Scotland for a celebration Scotch (3 hours by train from my research location---WOO!). Anyway, thanks for the pep talk! You're awesome! This is going to be your successful year---I believe it!

Yes! I highly recommend reading the 2014-2015 thread to anyone wondering about timelines and notifications and stuff.  Thanks for the well-wishes! Hugs and luck all around!

Yes! It really is an honor (honour---I'm practicing), isn't it? Cheers!

Best of luck to ya'll. I don't envy you one bit! Are you all at the final decision phase?

My story was a funny one. I'm from Mississippi, but was interning in NYC around the time Germany ETA decisions were to be made. At this point in time folks here had deduced that depending on the color and shape of the envelope you got it was either good news, meh news, or bad news. Big brown was good, mid-size white was alt, small white was bad. This was mostly synonymous regardless of the country. I don't know if the Commission does that anymore (dear God I hope not), but each day I'd call my folks asking if a big brown envelope came in the mail.

Eventually an envelope did come, but it was in a mid-size white envelope. Bleh! So I ask my Momma to open it...everything's in German. She, of course, has no idea what's going on. I ask her to try and sound out the German. I sorta understand her. We didn't have a scanner so I ask her to type out the first paragraph and e-mail it. I'd made it! Good news! Euphoria! Here's hoping each of you have your own "Where was I?" story.

I'm currently going through my own waiting period for another fellowship. The anticipation is a killer!

Elevate,

-D

I have not read through all the past forums and am curious - do all countries notify by post or do many also do it by email?

Hoping we all hear good news!

Starting last year or the year before, all or most countries notify by email.  From what I've seen, you'll receive an email with either P (Principle- YAY!), A (Alternate---eeekk more waiting), or NS (Not Selected... :( :( ) in the subject line, and then a full letter in the email.

The spread sheet seems to suggest that Belgium and Luxembourg have posted their ETA announcements.
