PhDerp Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I applied to two schools I thought I might've had a chance of getting into, and my undergrad school as a safety. (I applied to a bunch of longshots too, because why not? I'm in debt anyway!) I got into one of the two, and I'm stoked about the offer. I spoke with my advisor-to-be over Skype and it sounds like I will seriously be happy there, in that lab and under his guidance. I can't imagine a more perfect fit! Should I tell my current university "nevermindlolbacksies"? Can I rescind my application? Should I? Is it rude to? If I did rescind my application, I'd explain how I'd prefer to go to a different graduate program than my undergraduate one, which is understandable. But since a professor from there e-mailed me asking if I'd be interested in working with her, I'd like to respond to her personally as well. The reason I'm considering this is out of respect for people's time. I don't want this professor thinking I'm an option just to realize that I'm not, when she could've known weeks in advance and not wasted her time weighing me as a candidate.
PhDerp Posted February 21, 2014 Author Posted February 21, 2014 Also, rescind is a GRE vocab word. See? I used one! pohks, Quant_Liz_Lemon, music and 2 others 4 1
zipykido Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I don't think it's particularly rude to let other institutions to let know you've decided on another school. You might want to wait until you've received your package and you've officially accepted before doing so though just in case. Just make sure you a send a very well thought out letter and don't burn any bridges. DropTheBase and music 2
PhDerp Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 (edited) I think after the visit day I'll know for sure. At this point I'm convinced USC is a better move for me across the board. As long as I like the area, it's as close to a perfect fit as I could possibly imagine. So yeah, game plan: visit day, then decide. if it goes well, screw it! I'll at least tell UMass (politely) that I've found an offer I'd prefer. Maybe I'll still consider UCSD... Hopefully they reject me and make it easier. Lol Edited February 27, 2014 by PhDerp
pears Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I agree with zipykido: I would wait until you're received all decisions & know where you're at in terms of funding. I withdrew two of my applications right after being accepted & committing to my top choice program, & they seemed grateful that I let them know sooner rather than later. If there's absolutely no way you're going to UMass, though, regardless of funding etc., I would let them know about that decision (in a gentle/polite way) as soon as you can.

Yeah, I've been at UMass for years. I need to GTFO, haha. Plus, my SO's job ends in January, then he'll have nothing keeping him around except for waiting for me to finish my PhD! I'll wait to hear back from UCSD. But honestly, I can't imagine they'll be a better fit for me. If they are, let it be a wonderful, pleasant surprise!!
Lifesaver Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Props to you, friend. I could barely handle staying a single semester at UMass. I think I went home (to NY) 75% of the weekends. I would have to agree that GTFO is a great idea

USC is definitely the choice for me. Time to contact UMass!
