1Q84 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 As an aside... Is anyone else feeling terrified that Stanford, ucla, and Berkeley may all be sending out emails TOMORROW. Ack! kurayamino and angel_kaye13 2
Katla Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Big hugs to all who got hit by the Duke rejection bus! Keeping fingers crossed and sending positive vibes galore!
NMLogan Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 As good a time as any to bring this back http://academictimgunn.tumblr.com/
hreaðemus Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) As an aside... Is anyone else feeling terrified that Stanford, ucla, and Berkeley may all be sending out emails TOMORROW. Ack! ME I AM SCARED. *hides* Berkeley is my tippy tippy top choice you guys - I REALLY want to stay. And also I know "will be down for maintenance" doesn't mean "will be uploading decisions" but does anyone else feel like 9 AM tomorrow is going to be the moment of truth??! Edit: oh, maintenance is on Saturday, not Friday... Never mind. but still, eeep! Edited January 29, 2015 by hreaðemus
bgt28 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 WAIT...where is this information on Cali schools? I'm gonna puke lol
Katla Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 As an aside... Is anyone else feeling terrified that Stanford, ucla, and Berkeley may all be sending out emails TOMORROW. Ack! I think I completely blocked this out. Welcome back nausea!
kurayamino Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) Sorry for the nausea and horrible awful nervous feelings everyone, but I just couldn't suffer alone! Bgt28, I believe I found this information in one of the literature forums where someone had posted the average months that schools gave results. If you go to results and do, say, "English Berkeley" you'll see that January 31st was the day acceptances were posted. That would have been the last Friday of the month last year and thus.... tomorrow. Stanford also showed up that day as well (one or two, some others were posted early Feb I believe). UCLA is one of my top choices so I completely understand the nerves. I know I'll probably be furtively checking my phone starting at midnight and throughout the rest of the day Edited January 29, 2015 by kurayamino
Ramus Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 UCLA is one of my top choices so I completely understand the nerves. I know I'll probably be furtively checking my phone starting at midnight and throughout the rest of the day If history is any indication, UCLA won't notify until next week. But like everyone else, I'm hoping the word comes sooner rather than later.

Hannalore Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I'm also wondering if Vanderbilt will notify tomorrow, since historically they've done so on the last business day of the month.
HesseBunuel90 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 (edited) I would love to hear from them. Vanderbilt is one of my top choices, and also the university that contained my most meaningful contact with a POI. (Crosses fingers). Edited January 30, 2015 by HesseBunuel90
Dr. Old Bill Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Yeah, hearing from Vanderbilt would be nice (or not). Northwestern has notified by phone on Feb 1st in recent years. Not sure if they'd notify on Super Bowl Sunday, but tomorrow or this weekend is a distinct possibility for them too. Vanderbilt and Northwestern are very high on my list. As is Stanford.
kurayamino Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I just want to get in somewhere where some of you fabulous people are going because you are all, by far, some of the nicest and smartest people I've interacted with virtually. mmmscience 1
Dr. Old Bill Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I just want to get in somewhere where some of you fabulous people are going because you are all, by far, some of the nicest and smartest people I've interacted with virtually. Yeah, I gotta be honest -- while I want to get into any of my programs because of the obvious reasons, I can't deny that it would be extra delightful to attend somewhere with someone whom I've interacted a lot with on GC. There are a few folks here who, if I got multiple acceptances with one of them happening to be at the place they are attending, it would be a legitimate factor in my decision process. GC's been a godsend for me. Of course, my ridiculous post count probably says that for me.
InHacSpeVivo Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 GC's been a godsend for me. Of course, my ridiculous post count probably says that for me. It's true! Having been on here regularly for the 2012-2013 app cycle, this time around it has been a relief much more than a stressor. Everyone's support is tremendously appreciated!
SubmarineReflection Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Congrats to the Duke admit! I can't see the stats you're all talking about as I'm on mobile, but I would guess that they were creative too, at least in part. As an aside... Is anyone else feeling terrified that Stanford, ucla, and Berkeley may all be sending out emails TOMORROW. Ack! SLDKFJSLDKFJKSDLFJSDF I assume you're talking about English, not Comp Lit, right?
t1racyjacks Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 SLDKFJSLDKFJKSDLFJSDF I assume you're talking about English, not Comp Lit, right? I think so. comp lit usually comes quite late. my friend is in cornell comp lit and she will notify me if they send out flyers for campus visits etc. but it's no indication --sometimes the committee decides faster -- sometimes slower -- so last yr's results aren't really an accurate reflection of when they'll notify

That's what I can't stand about this kind of amorphous time period. At least with undergrad, you knew almost exactly when you would hear from schools!

I'm pretty sure the answer is more beer, which I'm going to have today also, if you're on a waitlist sometimes you're not notified, which means the wait will be longer
TeaOverCoffee Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 So do we think Ohio State is done sending acceptances? Has anyone been rejected from OSU this round yet? What do we think a pending status means? I just get the impression that they've already accepted all the people they want (all just speculation, of course), so does pending mean waitlisted or they just haven't updated your profile to inform you that you've been rejected? More important, have any people applying for the Victorian literature program been accepted to Ohio State? Sorry this sounds so obsessive. You know, when there is that one school that you want to attend the most, you fail to exert proper control over your anxiety.
allplaideverything Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 So do we think Ohio State is done sending acceptances? Has anyone been rejected from OSU this round yet? What do we think a pending status means? No, I don't think they're done, personally. A friend who did his MFA in creative writing at OSU says their department accepts its university-wide fellowship candidates first, then has to apply to the univ. for the fellowships and wait a few weeks to figure out how much money they have left for TAships. I imagine many schools do this--Indiana's MFA program did this, too, so I'll bet their PhD program is the same way. TeaOverCoffee 1

Everyone's support is tremendously appreciated! Totally agree about the 2012-2013 application cycle!! I avoided here for a long time because of that. Glad to see it's a different environment this time around.

Unless you get an official rejection, I'd say there's still cause to hold out hope. I know it probably takes a while for our DGS to get in touch with everyone (he's a busy dude haha), and as allplaideverything said, he likely is contacting the fellowship folks first. I think I mentioned on one of the threads that I feel like rejections went out within a couple weeks of acceptances last year, so I feel like everybody should have some idea of where they stand with OSU relatively soon. As opposed to some other schools where it gets dragged out forever (I even had one school that never notified me of anything last year lol. Good times). I think the root of anxiety is often intensified by family members and friends. Although they have your best interests at heart and they want to show they care, asking about whether you've been accepted to one program or another forces you to excessively think about grad school and how adcoms attend to business. So thank you for reassuring my sanity.

But there's a first time for everything! My distraction this week is working overtime, unfortunately. But at least I have a lot to do. Enjoy the beer
