I think wyatt should just publish his poems and sooner or later they'd give him an honorary phd

Haha. Thanks folks. Sadly I do have a sizable number of published poems, but no honorary Ph.D. is forthcoming.

it just means you have to publish more. also, they're always late with those things!

How often I have sat alone

And waited for the phone to ring,

But only heard the dial tone.

Some nights the silence holds me prone

In reverie, remembering

How often I have sat alone.

I've stared it down; my hopes have grown:

I thought I'd hear the siren sing--

But only heard the dial tone.

I've perched, a pauper on a throne

Before the phone, my rightful king;

How often I have sat alone.

When once I left it on its own

I rushed back at its summoning…

But only heard the dial tone.

Before its altar, I atone

With reverential suffering:

How often I have sat alone,

But only heard the dial tone.

So good! And so true! I sure wish that one of the many enlightening conversations I had with my advisors about how hard grad school is would have include the "waiting to hear back" conversation. ;)

Aww shucks.

I actually think it's generally fairly rude and unwarranted to post one's own poems unsolicited...but I just figured this little villanelle was a little too apropos to pass up. Glad it was received in that spirit. It really sums up how I'm feeling right now (even though cell phones don't have dial tones...alas!).

I found the ultimate time-waster. use this to write your sentences while waiting.......

I just used my last upvote on proflorax, but <3!

Considering I woke up today expecting a deluge of notifications on the results board, it’s been a very quiet morning so far. Something about seeing the calendar officially say “February” makes me feel like gradcafe’s servers should be overheating right now…

I think I jinxed it with my Ron Swanson gif... sorry guys :/

Although a Notre Dame interview is up.... congrats whoever! Big achievement!

^LOL this is hilarious. Love it.

WT, your poem is great too. This happens to me too, but also when I'm not expecting anything. Maybe I'm just naturally paranoid and jumpy though.

I don't know what the significance of today was supposed to be admissions-wise, but all I have in my emails are spam ads for crappy jobs in my area and an anti-bullying powerpoint sent to all the teachers at the high school I work at. Hope all you wonderful people who haven't gotten any good news get some as soon as possible. I will probably not be able to focus on anything until I hear word from Chicago again.

Have you guys seen this post?

It's for history, but I'd assume many similar patterns apply; most notably, it appears that notifications increase in number later in the week, reaching a Friday peak, before falling on Saturday and Sunday. So look towards Friday for that good news! :)

In this case "check your email" would be a better imperative, but can you believe there is no "look to the east" .gif??? The internet disappointed me today.

I'm officially jetlagged and/or have anxiety-driven insomnia. It's almost 4AM here and I've been up for about a good two hours...and no emails. I think the easiest way for me to handle this whole situation is to just assume that I won't be hearing anytime soon---looking at the results from last year and trying to predict when the adcoms will get back is creating weird expectations. Perhaps I should get started on my syllabi for second semester classes while I'm up...

I feel you. I'm working late in the office-- it's 3 AM-- and I'm getting to that anxious and sleep-deprived point where everything is funny. It's been three days of this. Solidarity!

Strangely, I'm out of upvotes for the day at this hour, but thanks! And hope you get some reset soon, too. :)

"Please note that the average acceptance rate over this period is roughly 35%." ....alright and they lost me. Kidding. This is extremely fascinating.

I don't know if Grad Cafe believes in this sort of thing, but Susan Miller's Astrology Zone has been a major source of comfort for me in the application process. I don't believe in the power of prayer but I do believe our fates are largely dictated by the alignments and disalignments of celestial bodies. If you are a Pisces, like me, Susan Miller predicts big things for us this month:

The full moon on February 3 will be a big moment in your timeline. Something you have worked hard to achieve will be ready to be unveiled and shown to the public or to influential people. The critical acclaim that will result from seeing your work will be enthusiastic and heartwarming. In fact, you may be amazed at how positive the response will be for your work. You are taking a leadership role in your industry now, but you may not even be aware of this truth yet, but later, in hindsight you will see how your career life took an important turn in the first quarter of 2015, and that you are clearly growing in stature and evolving into new and untried roles, the reason all this is so exciting.

This is so great!! Supposedly a good month to be a Virgo, fingers crossed!

I don't know...while I'm enjoying the assertion that I will hear amazing and unexpected news ~February 3, I am a little wary that ms Miller has noted that I will be thinking about doing my taxes this month...no shit.

I don't believe in astrology, but this did make me chuckle considering I'm presenting at a conference this weekend:

Lighting your house of friends, people, events, hopes, and wishes, it seems almost certain that you will have a fabulous dress-up event to attend within four days of February 3. It appears you will be among many smiling faces. You may be invited to a wedding, birthday party, charity benefit, major sporting event, conference, trade show, or other large event, but whatever the reason for the gathering, it will be beautifully appointed and flattering to be among the A-list guests.

You will find the full moon of February 3 will bring a relationship matter to fullness, in the sweetest possible way. This full moon gets my vote for the best of 2015. If your birthday falls within four days of February 3, your entire year will be showered with golden luck - however, all Aquarians will have something to celebrate.

According to Sarah Miller I am going to have an amazing 2015, bring it on! :P

Capricorn's forecast looks pretty hopeful!

This month will bring lots of good news, and most of it will be about money. The month opens with a full moon, February 3, in Leo 15 degrees. Because the full moon will conjoin Jupiter, you may hear news that puts a big smile on your face - the amount of the check due you seems quite substantial and more than you ever expected to see. Uranus will be prominent at the full moon, indicating whatever comes to you will be a surprise. In lieu of a check, someone may give you a beautiful, valuable gift.  Your eighth house of other people's money will be brought into play, so alternatively, the money you see may be a commission, bonus, generous university financial aid or scholarship, an inheritance, insurance payout, or tax refund
