Philhopeful Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Now that admissions season is nearing the end, I thought it might be helpful to have a thread for people to announce when they are leaving the forum for the year.
Establishment Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Since my schools have all announced I figure I'll go first. It was nice engaging in stressed out conversation with you, and wish everyone the best of luck at the programs they decide, getting off of waitlists, or preparing for another cycle. I hope to decide on my school soon and hope that some great people take the spots. Additionally, if any Harvard admits have questions about the department, I'm happy to answer them to the best of my ability (I'm an undergrad here). I'll keep my notifications on for the next few days or so, and if you pm me I'll send you my email address. All the best, On a scale from balling to NBA balling, how balling is it to have Amartya Sen in the department? shelbyelisha and brettmullga 2
wakeupright Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 On a scale from balling to NBA balling, how balling is it to have Amartya Sen in the department? Cambridge grad here. It's Kobe status to have his portrait in Trinity College's dining hall. Only non-white man on the wall. tpop, Establishment, nietzschemarket and 1 other 4
Cottagecheeseman Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I knew we had this somewhere. I'm signing out, I won't be on here much anymore. Congrats to all the accepted, and send me a message if you're interested in facebooking or something. PEACE OUT GRAD CAFE! greencoloredpencil 1
philosophia14 Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 It's been awesome, guys. Thanks for keeping me sane and enjoying the insanity throughout with me. I hope to meet some of you around conferences etc. ~I remember dfindley~ kant_get_in 1
Wait For It... Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I, too, am signing out, perhaps forever. It's been real. Congrats to all, and best of luck!
wandajune Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I should be signing out soon as well. Glad to have had all of you as company for these past months. PM me if you're headed to Wisconsin, or if you just want to be facebook buds.
zblaesi Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I'm planning to stick around a little longer. I'd like to assemble my thoughts on this whole process, just for my own sake and to help future users. Feel free to add me on Facebook for those of you who are leaving (just let me know your username on here): https://www.facebook.com/zblaesi
Eigen Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I'm always curious why so many people sign off at the end of a season, instead of staying around and continuing to be a part of the community. You've obviously met people and made connections, and now are going to be studying in the same fields as those individuals. You've gone through the process and have helpful advice to pass on to new people coming along. You'll also likely have questions as you start grad school to discuss, or to get advice on from more senior grad students. So if you don't mind my asking, why the April 15th signoff? perpetuavix, Establishment and ProfLorax 3
greencoloredpencil Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 It's been really lovely here and I appreciated interacting with all the wonderful people who've been here. I'll probably be around for a few more days in case anyone wants to PM me and just to watch things settle out and down completely. PS if anyone wants any colored pencils AND you promise me that you'll grade with I'll mail you one (just PM me).
sar1906 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I'm applying in Dec. 2014, Jan. 2015, so I'll be around for a while....if anyone is left....
PerpetualApplicant No More Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I'll be on and off, but not here as obsessively any more. Feel free to PM me if you want to facebook; half of what I do there is philosophy crowd-sourcing anyway.

I think the forum is a victim of its own success. You're right that we've made connections with people, and we'll be entering a fairly (if not very) small field with those same people. But that's exactly it--we've talked a lot, and will as likely as not meet each other in person at some point (APA's are huge). So whereas this forum started as a great place to connect with people we might not otherwise run in to about something that was all important to us, I'd prefer to talk to those people on facebook, without either anonymity (within such a small field, why bother?) or having to post everything publicly.

If anyone (including 'perpetualapplicant') wants to connect without the anonymity, send me a private message. We can exchange emails or Facebook. I do hope to see some of you in the future. I'll attend conferences under the name Faircloud. Hah.

I don't plan on signing off entirely (hence me posting this!), but I know that I've friended a lot of people on Facebook so that I no longer need to check in here. Plus, TGC can be a huge timesuck, and while it's a really good place to hang out - I think it's better if I can spend that time elsewhere.
hopefulpessimiste Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I'm signing off (for the most part), as well. But I do want to send out good vibes to everyone on here! It's been so great to have these forums to communicate with eachother as we go through this crazy, stressful, and majorly subjective process. I wish everyone the best of luck in future endeavors!
dgswaim Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) I'm still gonna be hanging around, though I won't be here quite as often. I wanted, however, to extend my very sincere congratulations to everyone who has been met with some level success. Philosophy is so competitive, so selective, and so to have success of any kind is something to be proud of. I'm also open to facebooking with anyone who's interested. Just PM me. Seriously though... congrats to all of you scholars and gentlemen. Edit: How could I be so sexist? Congrats to all you scholars, gentlewomen, and gentlemen. Establishment Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) I've added a few of y'all on Facebook already. Feel free to PM me if anyone else is interested. I'll still be sticking around though, giving out my worthless advice for next season's applicants as well as venting my own frustrations as I go through the application cycle again. Congrats to all of you who had success this year, and many best wishes for you as you move onto the next stage in your careers as well as for all you others who are either moving onto a different career path or will be trying again next time. philstudent1991 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I feel especially nostalgic, since BSG and I were probably the first two on here in this group. This has been a great resource, and it's nice that so many of us have found a program to attend. Best of luck everyone.

Such a good time. Dfindley <3
Hopephily Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I'll probably ween myself off of this forum. As many others have already said, this has been a great resource, and it's been a pleasure talking with many of you. I wish you all the best! greencoloredpencil 1
