ianfaircloud Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 I've seen the list of PhD admits (there were 9, I think), and got an email a week ago requesting hosts for the visit days. So I suppose it's technically possible people haven't been notified yet, but the odds of that are next to nothing. Thanks so much! If it helps, I can offer my anecdotal confirmation as well. They're flying a Kiwi out in two weeks (a friend of someone in my department, which is why I know). Thank you, too!
ianfaircloud Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 I've seen one post for Florida State University. Can anyone confirm that Florida State admitted students? Does anyone know when these notifications were delivered?
Monadology Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I've seen one post for Florida State University. Can anyone confirm that Florida State admitted students? Does anyone know when these notifications were delivered? I don't know when they were sent out, but one of my friends said he was admitted there when I asked him today (I hadn't had the chance to check in with him for a few weeks, so the window for when he heard is quite wide).

Wait For It... Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I've seen one post for Florida State University. Can anyone confirm that Florida State admitted students? Does anyone know when these notifications were delivered? I can also confirm that a friend of mine was admitted (quite early) to FSU. That's the only admit I know of, though.
philstudent1991 Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I couldn't find the thread where people were complaining about UCLA, but might I suggest that a couple people (myself included) contact Leiter about it (anonymously if preferred)? It is clear that their policy is unique among comparable schools and that it slows down the process tremendously, a process many other schools actively try to expedite. A post on his blog can do a LOT of good. Just a thought. greencoloredpencil, hopefulpessimiste and Structural_Realist 3

Of course this is understandably a carzy process, but UCLA is really making things difficult for not only the applicants, but also other departments with their policy. I'd be amenable to something like an anyonmous letter stating my concern.

I'd be amenable to something like an anyonmous letter stating my concern. No web-based communication is ever truly anonymous, not even on the dark web. If they *really* wanted to, they could trace it. But consider again how likely that is. I imagine they would respect a very carefully-worded, nicely crafted letter outlining your concerns that is *not* anonymous. This way, they can say, ok, at least this guy (or girl) is putting his name to his complaints. But again, it has to be a nicely-worded letter, written within bounds.

I don't think a letter to UCLA would do anything. I think you need someone influential with a big audience like Leiter to say something about it.
ProspectiveGradStudent Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 UCLA's admissions process has been ridiculous to the point where I just accepted at another institution and was glad of it. Even if I got in, I wouldn't want to go there after seeing how they handle their affairs. Best of luck to those still waiting though. ProspectiveGradStudent and Monadology 2
logos0516 Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I am waiting to hear from University of Virginia, as I am on their waitlist. Paul Humphreys sent out an email this past Thursday updating us on the situation. He in part said the following: "What we do know is that a couple of our candidates to whom offers have been made will not be in a position to make their decisions before April 13th. Because of the large financial commitment attached to each offer, our Graduate School is very reluctant to allow any department to enroll more students than their allotted number." I take it this means: a couple, i.e. two, candidates cannot get back to him (Paul) about their offers before April 13th, presumably because they are waitlisted in other programs and want to hear from them first before they make a decision. Second, I take the second sentence to mean: look, we have a waitlist, but our enrollment is strictly capped by the Graduate School, so we won't be making many offers from the waitlist if we even do, so don't get your hopes up. Does that seem like a reasonable assessment? ProspectiveGradStudent and Cottagecheeseman 1 1

SamStone Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 I posted this this other day (i think i may have put it in the wrong thread) I have yet to hear back from Brandeis, Western Michigan, Cal State LA, SFState, and University of Victoria (all MA programs)—which is almost half of the applications I sent out. Its pretty late in the game by now, is it safe to assume that these are all unofficial rejections? If so, is it normal for so many MA program not to respond at all?

I can only speak to Brandeis but I'm pretty sure if you were accepted or waitlisted you'd be contacted

I was accepted to SF State on March 5, but I would be somewhat less worried about not hearing anything from them. They have rolling admissions and don't follow the same timeline for decisions as PhD programs, so I wouldn't be surprised if they took their time and sent admissions out in waves. Also, another MA program accepted me yesterday without any prior contact. My feeling is some programs are just slow moving. That said, I would definitely send the grad directors emails asking what was up.

That person hasn't replied to my email, which I sent five days ago. I'll be blunt. The evidence is stacking up in favor of the view that UCLA totally fucked up this year, in terms of philosophy admissions. humean_skeptic, Monadology, philstudent1991 and 2 others 5
objectivityofcontradiction Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Some one should e-mail Leiter and get it reported on his blog, if only for the snarky-ass comments he might have about the situation. ta_pros_to_telos 1

What about 50 such emails (from 50 different applicants, of course)? Edited April 10, 2014 by humean_skeptic
ianfaircloud Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 Follow-up on UCLA: I heard from someone in the department who tells me that Normore is working hard to finish the applications. Normore, this person tells me, understands that he's falling behind. So in other words, they know they fucked up. I don't know why they did. Perhaps it was outside of their control. Anyway, a few of us could get offers this weekend, I presume.

ta_pros_to_telos Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Everyone I've contacted has directed me to Calvin Normore. My email and multiple phone calls to him have all gone unanswered thus far.
Monadology Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Everyone I've contacted has directed me to Calvin Normore. My email and multiple phone calls to him have all gone unanswered thus far. Thanks. Given that he's probably very busy/behind, I wonder if I should call like I planned (also it sounds like I wouldn't get an answer anyway).
