Accepted then Wait listed?

Hello everyone,

 

I wanted to consult with you on something very confusing. Last week, I got a very nice, enthusiastic, official acceptance letter from a school. On Sunday, I got a "clarifying note" from the same POI. This was a completely informal email were I was told that I was wait listed. Is this common or normal? I am very confused!

It's not normal. Are you sure you got an official acceptance? If so, it sounds like someone unfortunately screwed up.

If an acceptance comes directly from a professor it is unofficial (even if it sounds formal). Official letters have to be sent from the graduate school. It's sounds like they messed up. Sorry that's a bummer. Hope you get off the waitlist though!

That is so uncool. This is the first time I've ever read of a case like this. Did you get any form of letter with with the school's letterhead and signed by a chairperson?
