HDS thread 2014

Thank you for your feedback.

After some research I realized there is a bus I can take pretty close by. However it would still be almost forty minute commute.

That's the price of living in Arlington.

I generally recommend a bicycle. It's faster and more convenient than the T, and you never have to worry about parking it.

Does anyone have an idea what the living situation is like for young married couples at HDS? My future wife isn't the biggest fan of Boston for a few reasons, and the cost of living being one of them. Just curious if any young married couples could give some insight into things to do, places to live, and such.

I mean, don't get me wrong, rent in Boston sucks. You're looking at ca. $1.3-1.5k per month for a 1BR in Cambridge or Somerville. Having a spouse, however, makes paying for that a lot easier. I paid my wife's rent while she did her MA, now she's returning the favor.

My general advice is to look for an apartment which is convenient for the one making the money!

I've taken all your advice into account, as well as multiple people in "real life" who told me the same, i.e. don't drive to campus. Therefore, I've settled on a different place which is right next to public transport and an easy commute. It's very pricey but I think it's worth it.

This is a good call. It might be pricier on the short-view, but the cost of commuting, parking, tickets, etc. would come out in the long-run to be significantly more expensive.

^ Yeah that's what convinced me. I put in all the costs and I end up saving money this way. Plus, I visited Boston today and realized I just don't want to deal with the commute and parking situation going into campus.
