bczwx Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Got offers from Minnesota and Purdue, program in Foods and Nutriton. Any experts who have any idea which program is better? For MS in UMN, I have been matched with a research group, research focus: adipocytes and diabetes; for Purdue, it is a PhD program, I will rotate through 2 research groups, the research focus in Purdue is mainly minerals, Vitamine D, phytochemicals and energy metabolism. Funding in these two universities are the same. Anyone helps? :?: THX!!!!!
Tobson Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 well you should know wheter you want a MS degree or a PHD....? Same goes for specialization. If you are not sure about the specialization, the MS degree might be better, because you have the chance to gain insight over what you really want. We cannot make the desicion for you!

The two programs are very different and there's no basis for comparison here. You need to know which specialization you prefer and which degree you prefer. Ask yourself--what are your goals? Do you need a PhD in order to reach them? If you don't know the answers right now, I think that as Tobson said, the MS might be the better choice. It's shorter and it'll expose you to the field enough for you to know whether or not you want a PhD.
Repi3 Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I agree with the above comments regarding deciding whether you want to commit to a PhD program or not. In terms of the world of nutrition, UMN has incredibly reputable faculty and research.
bczwx Posted April 20, 2009 Author Posted April 20, 2009 Thanks everybody! I forgot to mention that actually my career goal in the future is to get into the food and nutrition industry. I would like to work in the R &D, and I believe a PhD is necessary. And Repi3, could you please kindly give me some more information about the field of nutrition research? BIG THX!!
mphhopeful Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 It sounds like for your purposes Purdue may better meet your needs (PhD). But, like the other posters said, it really depends on the specifics of what your want to study. If you want to focus on minerals, Vitamin D, phytochemicals and energy metabolism, choose Purdue. Would you have much flexibility there, if you decided that you wanted to emphasize something other than those topics?
