chocojoe Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Hello, I am not a regular here, but I really need advice and I found this forum. Currently, I have an offer (with funding) for a mathematics PhD program at the University of South Carolina. They need my response by April 15th. However, I am still waiting to hear from UCSD about their computer science PhD program. They seem very difficult to contact right now, and I've heard that they don't always give decisions by April 15th. What is my best course of action? I've heard that an offer accepted before April 15th is binding? Do people ever ask for an extension, and is it ever successful? Thank you, Joe
hugthepenguin Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I'm not too knowledgeable about asking for extensions, but for now I would call up UCSD and put as much effort as necessary to find out the status of your application. Tell them you received another offer but you would prefer to attend UCSD but you will not forfeit another offer of admission for that chance. Good luck.
Scarf in the wind Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Well, my approach is to keep my e-mail open at all times for the acceptance or *shudder the thought* rejection letter.
starofdawn Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 You still have a week to go before needing to tell Uni. South Carolina your decision. I hope UCSD gets back to you within that timeframe. If not... it's possible to accept Uni. South Carolina, then "ask to be released" if UCSD accepts you. It's not the preferred method, but I'm sure it happens every year. I've never asked for an extension before...
Vene Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 It's my understanding that you don't get an extension on the April 15th deadline, at least not if it's funded. But, this also means that UCSD needs to get back to you in time for you to accept if they're going to give a funded offer.
