Hi, I'm a female. Yay! My brain hurts from this process. I have two more applications to submit and then the great wait ensues.

Wow, also to ineedwine, I have to apologize. I was just thinking the other day when I was looking at this forum how sad it is that is is mostly all male, which is one of the unfortunate circumstances of philosophy. The belief must have penetrated me so deeply that I did indeed start to think everyone here was a dude.

How sad of me.

You are forgiven, it's an easy assumption to make in this field. Good luck in your applications as well!

Thank you. Still, it is a bit disheartening to see the very assumptions you critique and try to make visible begin to creep within yourself.

And I did think it a bit odd that you had to upload your sample twice at Oregon's application interface.

Oddly, although I feel I've certainly put forth a very earnest effort in my application process, during the first few app submissions I could not shake this feeling that everything that I had just turned in was absolutely horrid.

It can be, but that is why we do the work, right?

They should really fix that part of their system for next year.

Ugh, I know what you mean. Especially with Michigan's app which was due December 5th (why?!). My writing sample was not completely finished so I turned it in as it was, and plus the statement of purpose...I cringe at the thought of it. The first four I put in I had next to no confidence in despite working on the materials for months. It just feels too final once you hit that submit button. The clarity of hindsight is HD.

I started feeling better about my applications after the 5th one. It's really a learning process in itself, and probably why second-year applicants fare better than they did their first time through. I'm comforted by the thought that if I happen to get shut out this year, at least next year I will have a much better grasp of what I'm doing.

Very cool to see that your primary interest is in space and time. Wish I knew more about what's being done these days in that field. Welcome.

A lot of drugs, mostly.

Actually, a lot of the current work is in quantum theory and the relations between quantum mechanics and relativistic effects using Lorentz-transformations equations. It's really cool stuff! Combined with my background in philosophical logic, it mostly means I'm really good at confusing my students.

Hogwarts Phiosophy Of Muggle Studies, Other (F15) Rejected via Postal Service on 10 Jan 2015 I 10 Jan 2015

I'm surprised it lasted this long this year before there was a response from Hogwarts.

Sounds fun! And gotta love the pop quiz paradox. I think there's a corollary for grad admissions: "We'll make a decision regarding your application which you cannot predict." We just have to assume that we'll get rejected everywhere and then they'll have to let us in everywhere!

1. All admissions decisions are unexpected.

2. I do not expect to get into scools to which I did not apply.

3. Therefore, I will get into every school to which I did not apply.

Logic FTW!

Good luck on those last two. It can be quite a process.

I'd also encourage any lurkers on this site to make an account, stop in, and say hello. It's always nice to see who'll be sharing in our collective anxiety/nightmares over the next few months.

Well, you convinced me. I've been lurking for the past few months, but figured I'd sign up now that my applications are submitted and all I have left to do is worry for the next couple months.

Anyone have any guesses, estimates, predictions, or soothsaying knowledge-claims as to which school will be the first to send out some results?

I've got a pretty good feeling that Harvard, Princeton, MIT, USC, Rutgers, NYU, UConn, UMass, UC Berkeley, Cornell, and UCLA will send out acceptances before the end of January.

Sounds right. Looks like UNC is usually very early as well, judging from past years' results.

I was under the impression that Cornell and Berkeley don't give out their offers until mid-Feb. But I could just be wrong.

I was being a bit facetious.

Honestly, I'm thinking OSU or Duke

Sidevans' prediction site is a good place to start: https://philosophyadmissions.wordpress.com/predictions/ He's with Overoverover on OSU and Duke, but UNC is also quite likely. Riverside and Chicago have also released early in the past few years (https://faircloudblog.wordpress.com/history/), so they're possibilities, too.

Sometimes, I feel like a sports fan making calls on teams' first draft picks, which is rather disconcerting..

Anyone else get an email from Georgetown saying that they haven't yet received a transcript? Or potential interpretation of what this means? It would seem pretty unremarkable except that it was from the director of grad admissions, not a generic GSAS email like some others they've sent.

I applied to Georgetown and didn't receive this eMail.

I believe it means they do not have one or more of your transcripts :P

Just hit 'em up and let them know you have previously submitted it and can send in another copy if it did not show.

Well this is exactly what I don't need to spend time looking at.

Another person interested in phil of religion! Fantastic. Any particular areas/thinkers you're hoping to focus on in grad school?

Does anyone know what was UConn deadline for last year? If the 2014 season results gives us any insight, there is a possibility that we hear from them this week, though I find it very unlikely given that the deadline was last Thursday.
