lgwslp Posted June 12, 2014 Share Posted June 12, 2014 Okay, so for those of you that have been accepted to graduate school (specifically those who have been out of school for more than a year) but everyone really, what are you doing to prepare? I feel almost a bit out of the loop because I graduated a year and a half ago (not that long I know), and i'm hoping I remember things from my undergraduate classes that I need to, etc. Anyone else have those feelings or thoughts? Just wondering what I should be doing to prepare. As of now, i'm brushing up on Phonetics, and some basics about normal communciation and then the spectrum of disorders. I've also been doing some reading on hearing and language screenings, because I think that's what we are doing first in my graduate program, before classes even begin. BiancaNicole21 Posted June 12, 2014 Share Posted June 12, 2014 I've been reading several SLP grad student blogs and one thing that seems to be a recurring theme is An Advanced Review of Speech-Language Pathology: Preperation for PRAXIS and Comprehensive Exam (it's purple and yellow). I put it on my wishlist for graduation and have been reading it ever since! It contains basically everything we learned in undergrad with more detail as it is used to prepare for the PRAXIS. Every grad blog mentions it and how they wish they had purchased it before starting grad school so they could have used it to reference and better understand material in their courses. I love it so far! It is a great tool to refresh your memory on topics you may have forgotten or need practice with! Plus, you'll likely purchase it down the road to help practice so might as well buy it now Oh, and you are not the only nervous one!! This is all so exciting but the wait makes me nervous. I checked amazon, too, but a lot of people were complaining that the amazon listed book doesn't come with the flash drive with 4 practice tests that the ASHA site mentions (and it's mentioned in the beginning of the book). Just wanted to let you all know in case you were considering getting it from a site other than ASHA. -- I really want to order it now so that I have the next 2 months to go over it, but I think I will just wait. if I'm going to spend the money on a book I need for the praxis, I want to make sure it has the practice tests! ballerina18 Posted June 14, 2014 Share Posted June 14, 2014 (edited) Like everyone else I am a big bag of mixed emotions. I'm beyond thrilled, but super nervous to start grad school. I haven't cracked open any textbooks to review yet, but it's on my to-do list. I've bought a few school items (laminator, glass frames to make dry erase boards, label-maker, & a few other things) and I've been trying to figure out my housing situation. I would like to room with another slp student if I can find someone from my cohort who needs a roommate, otherwise I need to find a studio apartment. I've also been spending a lot of time on slp blogs and forums. I like the two slp blogs already posted above, but I've also been exploring the slp section of the student-doctor network, slp grad student videos on youtube (oliviaslp), and I like to read the comment sections on slp job articles. I'm looking at living on campus for the first quarter and figuring out if I can get an apartment after that because it's just so overwhelming trying to find a place out of state!! I spent the last few months emailing management companies/landlords in the area to determine if they'd accept my husband's GA + loans as income (since getting a job from out of state is challenging), and found several. It's comforting to read and recall certain terms or facts that I may have learned 2 years ago in A&P or language development. I would recommend waiting to purchase the book that includes the 4 tests just to save money down the road. I assume you will want them before taking the Praxis. I also love blogs! I saw speechymusings was already recommended! It has been my favorite as well. Shannon created a site that offers advice, frrebies, reviews, organizational tips (which I need desperately), and helpful resources! The blog has by-far been the most helpful! Home Sweet Speech Room, Sublime Speech, Hanna B Grad Student SLP, and SLP Echo have also been recommended by many and I have found them informative. OliviaSLP is a YouTube blogger who I adore! She is exremely relatable and has blogged her grad experience from the months before she started, until her last day as a grad student! I have been told several times to relax and not worry too much about not knowing stuff. I know that our minds will be stuffed with knowledge and experience in the next two years!
