jaycee09 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Hi guys! I finally decided to join UCLA for my MS program in CS. I'm very excited about it and looking forward to the classes in fall. I was wondering if there is anyone like me, admitted to UCLA and waiting for the classes in fall. I'd be interested to have a lil discussion here with you guys about the campus, classes and other related stuff. Anybody interested, please post a reply here. Thanks and happy college hunting!
Fresh1234 Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Hi!! I 'll be also attending MS in CS Fall 2009. At the moment I am searching for housing, so I didn't have time to think about the classes.
Rojahon Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Hey! I'll be starting the PhD program there in Fall 09. Have you guys been contacted by an adviser or anyone? I think we can start registering for classes on June 15th, but I don't really have an idea of what I need to take. I got my BS in math and even though I have a strong foundation in CS, I imagine I'll need to take some leveling courses.
jaycee09 Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 i haven't been contacted by anyone from the school after I heard the news of the admit. I have no idea of when we could start registering for classes and who my advisor is. Did any of you receive any mail regarding these? Any idea if there will be an orientation program arranged for us? and when? Currently I am in the middle of processing for residency acceptance for tuition purposes. And I am also in a look out for a proper commuting means (other than car, ofcourse, coz that'd be my last option). If you have any sort of idea for commuting to UCLA other than by car, could you just share that with me here? Anyone having any other question, can post them here......may be we could help....this thread is meant for just that. Thanks a lot and see you in the fall!!
arnufc Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 another CS MS program student here.... i have also not heard from them since admission.. !! jaycee what do you mean by "middle of processing for residency acceptance"? i submitted my SLR when i accepted their admission offer but, haven't heard anything since then.... no news about housing as well..!!
jaycee09 Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 Well, after i submitted my SLR, I received a letter from the UCLA registrar asking for certain documents as proof of my residency. Thats what I meant when I said I'm in the middle of processing for residency acceptance. What about u? Are u availing for the resident tuition fees as well? arnufc....are you doing any specific preparation for the school? I have no idea what else to do except to wait for some kinda communication from them. I haven't even decided on my specialization yet! How about u?
Rojahon Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 I'm glad to hear from some others in my situation. Graduate orientation is on September 18th. <http://gsa.asucla.ucla.edu/orientation/index.htm> There are some helpful links on that page, as well. Things do seem to be running a little slow. I think the main reason for that is because the Spring 2009 Quarter at UCLA doesn't end until June 12th. I've been done and graduated from my undergraduate university for a couple weeks already, so I've been sitting around going, "Now what?!" <http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/calendar/acadcal08.htm> My guess is that when the Spring Quarter ends, we'll start getting more info. Also, Fall '09 enrollment begins on June 22nd. <http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/>
Rojahon Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Anyone hear anything, yet? I haven't. Enrollment starts tomorrow... EDIT: Been doing some research. I don't think enrollment starts for us tomorrow, necessarily. From what I understand, they randomly assign us enrollment times, that is, when we are allowed to start registering. I think you can see your time by going to "View Enrollment Appointment Times" on URSA.
sandymiss Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Thanks so much for sharing the post. simulation credit auto
jaycee09 Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 yeah, i saw the same too. Can you tell me what exactly it means by "Enrollment Appointment Times"? And how do I know which one is mine? Oh, I have one more question..... have any of you guys picked up your advisor yet? I had been in an impression that we'll all be assigned an adviser by the department but then, it looks like it's up to us to pick someone to be our adviser. Did you guys know about this? One more concern.....in order to register for a class, do we need an advisor's approval? If that's the case then I am in a big trouble now, coz i haven't yet contacted any faculty requesting for their advising, and I fear i might get late in registering for the class, in the process of looking for a prof! Please share your inputs. It would be a great help to me! Thanks much! See you guys soon
Rojahon Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 yeah, i saw the same too. Can you tell me what exactly it means by "Enrollment Appointment Times"? And how do I know which one is mine? I'm not sure, but when I go to "View Enrollment Appointment Times" on URSA and select Fall 2009, I only see one date in the "Appointment Start" column. It's in the "Graduate" row. I'm assuming that's my time (June 28th). Oh, I have one more question..... have any of you guys picked up your advisor yet? I had been in an impression that we'll all be assigned an adviser by the department but then, it looks like it's up to us to pick someone to be our adviser. Did you guys know about this? I actually just emailed last night asking about the adviser situation. No word back, yet. I've been thinking that they would email us the name of our adviser or something. Were you told that we are supposed to pick our own adviser? One more concern.....in order to register for a class, do we need an advisor's approval? If that's the case then I am in a big trouble now, coz i haven't yet contacted any faculty requesting for their advising, and I fear i might get late in registering for the class, in the process of looking for a prof! I have no idea. But, I emailed the coordinator of the mentoring program last night to see if I should have a mentor already, and he said that they are working on setting it up and should have it up soon. He seemed to indicate that they were on schedule. So, this makes me think that we are okay on time because we are supposed to be able to ask our mentors about what classes to take and how many. I'm assuming we will be assigned a mentor before we have to enroll.
jaycee09 Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 Can you tell me who exactly did you ask regarding the adviser issue? Can you post the email or the link in this thread? I just called the graduate division of computer science regarding this and she said that I should be picking up what she called a 'preliminary adviser' and set an appointment with him/her to consult about picking my courses. Later, if I want, I have an option of changing my adviser. That's what she said and it was a news to me! I haven't heard of any such system anywhere. And from your post, it looks like there's a discrepancy somewhere and now I'm a lot more confused :x Anybody there who is already in UCLA and who understands the system inside?

Sorry, I think I see how I confused you. I sent two emails last night, not just one. One to the cs grad office and another directly to the mentor coordinator (there is a cs grad student mentoring program: http://csgsc.cs.ucla.edu/mentoring.html). The mentor coordinator got back to me. I guess I need to start working on getting an adviser then...
jaycee09 Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 Hi guys, I'm back with more new questions. Guys, please, post in any information you know regarding your plans with ucla...be it classes, advisors, commuting, anything....I've been wanting to know what others are doing for this fall. Already registered for the classes ? Picked an advisor yet? And most important of all.....commutation. Is there any one who's outside LA? I wanna know how are you guys gonna commute to the school? I just saw the option of vanpooling in their website and was wondering if anybody is considering this option. As i stay almost an hr drive away from UCLA, I want to consider other safer and convenient options to driving by myself. Any idea with that? Please share them here. Also, did anybody meet with any prof yet? How important is it to meet with the advisors before our classes begin? Yeah one more question......did anybody get their bruin card yet? Folks, do share in your information and even your queries with all of us here. That's what this thread is for. Thanks !
